LIBRARY MEDIA CENTER CLERK

 

DEFINITION

Performs duties in, and is responsible for, all operation aspects of the library media center.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Library Media Center Clerk (LMCC) performs all duties in, and is responsible for, all operational and maintenance aspects of the library media center and textbooks.  This one position class works directly with students and staff in introducing, researching, locating and securing appropriate library resources, books, and media center materials.  The LMCC assists in the area of information retrieval and library functions.  The LMCC is expected to maintain an accurate and up-to-date computer catalog of all library resources and related library functions.

 

GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE OF:

Technical Skills:

  • Modern library media center practice, procedures and equipment: information retrieval, research, internet and Dewey Decimal system

  • Operation of common office and computer equipment including, but not limited to,  computer and related software, telephone, copier and other duplicating equipment, fax machine, and audio-visual equipment

    Managerial Skills:

  • Record-keeping techniques and time management skills

  • Preparation, review and control of assigned duties, technical aspects related to assigned accounting and record-keeping duties

    Interpersonal Skills:

  • Correct business English, vocabulary, grammar and usage, spelling and punctuation

  • English grammar, vocabulary and layout for letters and reports

  • Interpersonal skills using tact, courtesy and diplomacy

  • Oral and written communication skills with supervisor, public, students and parents, and co-workers

  • Telephone and email techniques and etiquette

  • Principles of  proper community, staff and student relationships

     

    GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS, ABILITY TO:

    Technical Skills:

  • Accurately keyboard at 40 words per minute

  • Operate computer equipment to input and manipulate data, generate records, reports and statements, compile, prepare, maintain, verify and submit accurate and complete records

  • Operate and maintain a variety of modern office equipment including, but not limited to, a computer and related software, telephone, copier and duplicating machines, fax machine and audio-visual equipment

  • Research and analyze new technologies, and provide reports to staff for curriculum implementation

  • Read, learn, interpret and explain rules and regulations, policies and procedures with good judgment

  • Utilize short-term and long-term memory recall

  • Utilize reading, writing, and arithmetic skills

  • Adapt to perform repetitive work, or continuously perform the same work, according to set procedures, sequences, or place

  • Adapt to perform a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another of a different nature without loss of efficiency or composure

     

    Managerial Skills:

  • Plan and organize work, meet schedule and deadlines

  • Work confidently and independently in performing assigned duties without immediate supervision

  • Make independent  decisions and solve problems

    School Requirements:

  • Pass District pre-employment tests

  • Maintain alertness to school-related issues

  • Maintain professional appearance and work habit

     

    Communicative Skills:

  • Maintain confidentiality of records and information per Government Code section 6267

  • Answer telephone and greet the public courteously, provide information, directions and assistance

  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, understand and carry out oral and written directions in an efficient manner

  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others, exhibit a positive approach in dealing with students, parents and fellow staff members

  • Demonstrate auditory comprehension (understanding and processing the spoken word)

  • Demonstrate visual comprehension (understanding and processing the written word and visual observations)

  • Positively interact with coworkers, teachers, students, parents, and the public in person, on the phone and through email

  • Communicate effectively with students, taking responsibility for overseeing and supervising students

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • Two years of full-time higher education (48 credit hours)

  • Two years prior-related experience involving library operations including, but not limited to, circulation, cataloging, organizing and research (preferred)
