TURLOCK UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT JOB CLASSIFICATION TITLE: Para-professional Range 9 DEFINITION: Under supervision of a certificated teacher, serve as an assistant to the teacher by aiding in the supervision and training of students; assist in the preparation and assembling of teaching materials and perform other related work as required. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Assist teachers in the conduct of lessons and other classroom activities. 2. Tutor students and work with student groups under teacher direction; assist in maintaining order among students in the classroom and on school grounds. 3. Work with instructional materials; prepare for, assist with and clean up after various classroom projects; assist teachers in the supervision of students; assist in the preparation of graphic and written teaching materials; operate audio-visual equipment; grade papers, operate duplicating equipment, and keep records as directed by the teacher; attend to students' physical needs in the classroom. 4. Assist in maintaining inventory of books and teaching aids; may perform a variety of tasks for many teachers; order and distribute supplies as instructed; may assist with programs, equipment and materials to meet the needs of exceptional students; help individual students with specific problems. 5. Supervise bus, cafeteria and/or yard duty, and perform other related work as required. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The physical requirements indicated below are examples of the physical aspects that this position classification must perform in carrying out essential job functions: • This type of work will involve walking or standing for extended periods. • Stooping, squatting, kneeling, overhead reaching and repetitive bending may be involved frequently with this position. • Perceiving the nature of sound, near and far vision, depth perception, providing oral information, the manual dexterity to operate equipment, and handle work with various materials and objects are important aspects of this job. • Persons performing service in this position classification will be exposed to outdoor conditions including, but not limited to, extreme temperature; equipment and objects related to the position. • Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable a person with a disability to perform the essential functions of the job. SAFETY REQUIREMENTS: • Operate equipment according to established safety procedures. • Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including lifting, pushing and pulling. • Use provided safety equipment. • Report any unsafe conditions in work area that are not correctable to supervisor immediately. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of: • Child growth and development. • English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary. Ability to: • Pass the competency test for para-professionals, or have completed at least 48 college semester units/possess an Associates degree or higher. • Assist with supervising the learning activities. • Work independently on own initiative. • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions. • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationship with students, parents, and staff. Experience: • Prior experience in working with school age children. Education: • High school graduate or equivalent.
