JOB DESCRIPTION Palm Springs Unified School District A.R. # 4219.375 MAINTENANCE WORKER/FABRICATOR/WELDER PURPOSE STATEMENT The Maintenance Worker/Fabricator/Welder builds and maintains hand rails, gates, fences and playground equipment; installs, repairs and fabricates materials out of metal; assists with construction, welding, and sheet metal; and ensures safety and resolving immediate safety concerns. FUNCTIONS • Inspects school sites, playground/athletic equipment, etc., ensures safety, identifies necessary repairs and provides an ongoing program of preventive maintenance. • Maintains equipment, tools, and supplies. • Repairs metal surfaces (e.g. fences, gates, grates, tools, parts, bleachers, playground equipment, etc.). • Requests equipment and supplies, maintains inventory and ensures availability of required items. • Responds to emergency situations and resolves immediate safety concerns. • Transports various items (e.g. tools, equipment, supplies, etc.). • Assists other trades personnel as may be required. • Prepares various documents (e.g. design drawings, purchase requisitions, orders, etc.). • Researches a variety of topics (e.g. regulations on playground equipment, etc.). • Orders materials and supplies, maintains inventory and ensures availability of items as needed. • Oversees assigned personnel and provides input and recommendations as appropriate. • Fabricates various items. • Maintains District vehicle (e.g. checking fluid levels, tire pressure, etc.) in proper working condition. • Assists other personnel as may be required. • Performs related duties as assigned. JOB REQUIREMENTS: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Experience or training equivalent to that required for completion of an informal or formal apprenticeship as a welder and one year of work experience as a welder. SKILLS to operate equipment used in welding and sheet metal fabrication; fabricate and weld various types of joints from all positions, using either electric or oxyacetylene equipment; operate electric, MIG, heli-arc, and acetylene welding equipment used in maintenance welding and fabrication; set up and adjust welding equipment; perform mathematical calculations used in measurement and in estimates of supplies and materials; prepare and maintain accurate records; adhere to safety practices. KNOWLEDGE of tool, materials and techniques of welding and metal fabrication; layout and design; methods, materials, equipment, and safety practices used in electric, MIG, heli-arc, and acetylene welding; working properties of various metals commonly used in welding; Standard practices, materials, and processes of the welding trade; types of welds, joints, and welding rods and materials; types of welds, joints, and welding rods and materials; heating and welding characteristics of various metals and of the fluxes and materials used in welding; proper storage of materials and supplies; safety regulations and practices in the use and storage of welding equipment and materials; welding high pressure lines such as gas, water, steam lines, etc; welding and fabrication mechanics in order to prevent distortion, meet critical dimensions, tolerances and provide strength. ABILITY to maintain welding equipment in safe working condition; read and interpret plans and specifications; develop and work from diagrams, sketches and blueprints; plan and organize work; operate a vehicle, observing legal and defensive driving practices; maintain work-related records; take accurate measurements and make estimates of supplies and materials; Estimate and requisition parts, supplies and equipment needed to complete assigned projects; maintain a work pace appropriate to a given workload; establish and maintain effective and harmonious working relationships with students, fellow employees, teachers, and administrators; understand, be sensitive to and respect the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disabilities and sexual orientation of students, teachers, administrators and staff; maintain consistent, punctual and regular attendance. WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: frequent lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling or otherwise move objects weighing 60-100 pounds from the floor to an overhead position; frequent walking, kneeling, squatting, climbing and balancing; ability to sit and stand for sixty (60) minutes consecutively; ability to climb ladders and climb stairs; frequent stooping, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity.
