SANTA CLARA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT CLASS TITLE: EQUIPMENT MECHANIC BASIC FUNCTION: Under the direction of the Transportation Manager, perform journey-level and complex repair, maintenance and servicing to school buses and other vehicles and grounds maintenance equipment. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: Perform journey-level mechanical repair work on school buses and other diesel- and gasoline-powered vehicles and equipment, including grounds maintenance equipment; assure buses conform with California Highway Patrol standards for passenger vehicles; complete related maintenance records. E Inspect and diagnose mechanical defects in gas and diesel-powered school buses, trucks, mowers, tractors and other mechanical equipment; drive and test school buses and provide emergency road service to disabled District school buses and vehicles. E Tune and disassemble diesel engines and repair, adjust and replace parts; recondition and adjust ignition and carburetor systems; repair, fit and adjust valves, pistons, rings and bearings; clean, repair and replace carburetors, fuel pumps, fuel lines, gauges and electrical wiring systems. E Perform major mechanical repairs; overhaul transmissions, differentials and universal joints; repair, adjust and line brakes; rebuild and replace air and hydraulic brake system components. E Read and interpret schematics and diagrams; diagnose and repair mechanical defects in a variety of vehicles. E Operate a variety of equipment and machinery, including hoists, jacks, torches and welding equipment and a variety of power and hand tools. E Repair and replace alternators, generators, starters, voltage regulators, distributors and lighting systems. E Conduct periodical mechanical safety checks on buses as mandated by law; test vehicles for compliance with established laws, rules and regulations and standards. E Perform gas and electric welding and fabrication; perform minor body work on vehicles as assigned. E Maintain work area in a safe, clean and orderly condition; maintain equipment and tools in a safe and proper working condition; notify appropriate personnel of unsafe working conditions. E Respond to service calls and perform emergency repairs as needed; drive a school bus on assigned routes as assigned. E Complete work orders and maintain records of time worked and materials used; recommend and assist with the purchase of needed parts, supplies and tools; complete records of vehicle maintenance and repair, parts costs, and vehicle inspections. E Perform related duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: KNOWLEDGE OF: Advanced principles of diesel, gasoline-powered internal combustion engines. Methods, tools, equipment and materials used in journey-level repair and maintenance of automotive equipment. Engine rebuilding and machine shop skills, including methods, materials, tools and equipment. State DMV regulations. Shop math applicable to vehicle maintenance. Proper lifting techniques. Health and safety regulations and procedures. ABILITY TO: Perform journey-level and repair, maintenance and servicing to school buses and other automotive and grounds maintenance equipment. Perform journey-level repair of mechanical and electrical malfunctions and defects. Operate shop equipment and tools including ARC and gas welding equipment, jacks and power tools. Read, interpret, explain and apply mechanical diagrams, repair manuals and parts catalogues. Perform major repairs to automotive vehicles. Maintain records related to assigned activities. Plan and organize work. Estimate labor and cost of materials for repairs as needed. Understand and follow oral and written directions. Work cooperatively with others. Observe legal and defensive driving practices. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school and three years journey-level experience in diesel and gasoline internal combustion engines. LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Valid California class B driver's license and appropriate CHP certificate to operate a school bus; valid medical card and first aid certificate issued by an approved agency. WORKING CONDITIONS: ENVIRONMENT: Shop environment; subject to regular exposure to fumes, dust and odors, noise from equipment operation, and driving a vehicle to conduct work. PHYSICAL ABILITIES: Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a variety of specialized tools and equipment, standing for extended periods of time, bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching, turning/twisting, crawling under vehicles, carrying, pushing or pulling tool boxes and engines, lifting heavy objects weighing up to 100 pounds, and heavy physical labor. HAZARDS: Exposure to fumes, dust, odors, dirt, oil/grease, gases from vehicle operations, and working in a cramped or restrictive work chamber.

Must also have a valid medical card and first aid certificate issued by an approved agency. Candidate must have knowledge of advanced principles of diesel, gasoline-powered internal combustion engines. Candidate must have knowledge of methods, tools, equipment and materials used in journey-level repair and maintenance of automotive equipment, as well as knowledge of engine rebuilding and machine shop skills. Candidate should have knowledge of State DMV regulations, shop math applicable to vehicle maintenance, proper lifting techniques, and health and safety regulations and procedures. A candidate with an ASE Diesel Certification and knowledge of electrical diagnostics is preferred.
