VACAVILLE UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT Speech and Language Therapist CLASSIFICATION: Certificated Personnel The Speech and Language Therapist is directly responsible to the Director of Special Education. The primary function of this position is to identify and remediate communication disorders of students. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS 1. Serves as a member of the Individual Educational Plan (IEP) Team and to the Student Study Team (SST), as appropriate. 2. Administers and interprets diagnostic tests to identify the language, articulation, phonological, voice fluency, and hearing needs of referred students. Determines when the communication handicap is the primary handicapping condition, and conveys this to the IEP Team. 3. Writes diagnostic reports, makes recommendations to the IEP/SST members, and facilitates referrals to other agencies, clinics, etc., when needed. 4. Prepares appropriate Individual Educational Plans (IEPs) for students who meet criteria for the program. 5. Implements effective remediation strategies and behavioral management techniques to individuals enrolled in therapy. 6. Monitors and facilitates student progress, and reevaluates this progress on an annual/triennial basis. 7. Consults with parents, teachers, and administrators regarding the communication needs of students. 8. Strives to establish and maintain positive relationships with staff, parents, students, and community members. 9. Develops and maintains weekly schedules which allow time for direct services to students, diagnostic assessments, consultation with parents and staff members, IEP/SST meetings, staff meetings, and other responsibilities as required. 10. Provides speech and language screening as needed. 11. Communicates program needs to immediate supervisor. ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS 1. Organizes and maintains required records. 2. Accepts and processes referrals. 3. Provides inservice training, as appropriate. 4. Assists in the evaluation of overall program effectiveness. 5. Performs other duties as assigned. (over) TRAINING, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE A Master of Arts (MA) or Master of Science (MS) degree in the subject area is desired. Must possess or be eligible to possess, and then obtain, a Clinical or Rehabilitative Services Credential or other credential authorizing such service in the public schools. 3/21/96
