DEFINITION:

Under the supervision of Director of Special Education, the SLP provides diagnostic, remedial, and consultative services for school age students as well as adults with communicative disorders. The SLP will develop and provide remedial services and instructional activities for students with impairments of language, speech and hearing.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Valid California Speech-Language Pathology Services Credential, or equivalent.
  • Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology Board.
  • Bachelor’s degree, including all courses to meet certification requirements.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree or other advanced training beyond credential requirements.

TYPICAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Works as a member of a multidisciplinary team to assess and diagnose students’ learning/communication difficulties, plan remediation strategies and periodically evaluate student progress.
  • Provides individual and small group speech language services to students who require speech, voice or fluency correction, and/or language remediation.
  • Integrate and align speech language services with the regular education curriculum, to the maximum extent possible.
  • Communicates student’s progress to appropriate school personnel and parents/guardians.
  • To increase the child’s awareness of sounds and the differences among them, and to help lay the groundwork for better speech and lip-reading, better hearing response, and better understanding of the environment of children with hearing loss.
  • Provides an environment to establish and reinforce appropriate student behavior, attitudes, social skills, and self-image.
  • Participates in case conferences and student study team meetings as needed or requested.
  • Provides consultation to school staff and parents to enrich all students’ language experiences.
  • Provides other services to regular and special education students as needed.
  • Conduct assessment of pupils and completes paperwork for Individualized Education Program (IEP) Team meetings, and maintains state registers as required.
  • Completes Medi-Cal billing for covered services.
  • Establishes and maintains a systematic record keeping system to monitor compliance with Federal state regulations and district procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Recent educational and remediation trends related to speech and language handicapped.
  • Federal and state laws and regulations surrounding the provision of special education services and district policies and procedures.
  • Evidence-based principles, methods, techniques, and strategies in speech and language assessment functions.
  • Applicable and appropriate speech and language instruments, techniques, and procedures.
  • Developmental characteristics of typically developing pre-school and school age students.
  • Behavior management strategies and techniques.
  • Socio-economic and cultural background differences of the school population.
  • The relationship and differences between clinical and educational speech pathology practices.
  • Professional requirements and performance in due process matters and litigious environments.
  • Basic computer and instructional technology skills.

ABILITY TO:

  • Establish and maintain productive collaborative relationships with others.
  • Prepare comprehensive, reliable, valid, and timely assessment reports.
  • Conduct, analyze, and effectively utilize a variety of individual and group interventions applicable to the students with speech and language needs.
  • Analyze and interpret assessment data for the purpose of designing programs and instructional activities for and to students with speech and language disorders.
  • Apply knowledge of methods of supporting and extending access to instruction.
  • Interpret, apply, and explain rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Develop and provide speech and language related services to students with physical and other disabilities.
  • Provide technical expertise, information, and assistance to site personnel and parents.
  • Maintain consistent, reasonably regular, punctual attendance consistent with federal, state, and local standards.
  • Perform duties and responsibilities in an efficient and effective manner.
  • Safely and successfully perform essential job functions consistent with federal, state, and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or qualitative productivity standards.
  • Communicate effectively in oral and written form.
  • Follow state and federal timelines.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS:

  • Speaking to exchange information and make presentations.
  • Hearing with or without use of hearing aid(s) sufficient to hear any conversation with others; understandable voice and speech patterns.
  • Manual dexterity and coordination sufficient to operate office and/or classroom equipment.
  • Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching, climb and/or balance.
  • Eyesight corrected or uncorrected sufficient to read a variety of materials including but not limited to fine print.
  • Regularly sit, stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, and must regularly lift 10-15 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move 20-40 pounds.
  • Driving a vehicle to conduct work.
  • May require to correctly transfer or restrain a child physically, if needed.
