INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANT I

Range 7

DEFINITION:

To assist a classroom teacher with the instruction of students; and to relieve a classroom teacher of routine clerical work. Provides student supervision.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:

Receives general Supervision from the principal. Technical and functional supervision is provided by the teacher. May exercise some supervision of students, Exercises no supervision of adults or other employees.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

Assists in the planning of strategies used in the instruction of students within specific programs.

Assists teachers in instructing small groups or individual students by reinforcing information.

Assists students in improving mathematical, reading and language skills.

Compiles instructional materials for classroom use.

Discusses particular classroom or student problems with teacher.

Supervises students.

Operates duplicating machines and other office equipment.

Assists with grading and collecting papers.

Performs a variety of clerical duties such as cutting stencils, keeping attendance records, issuing, collecting and maintaining classroom Supplies.

Operates audio-visual equipment. May be asked to monitor testing, assemble instructional materials.

Assists in assembling bulletin boards, learning centers, and other classroom areas.

Supports district priorities for a safe and clean campus.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of:

Modern office practices, procedures, methods and equipment. 

Cultural differences and needs of pupils enrolled. 

Basic mathematics. 

English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation. 

Effective techniques and methods of child supervision.

 

Ability to:

Ability to work effectively with children of differing ability levels. 

Understand and communicate with children and adults of different racial, cultural and social economic backgrounds. 

Make arithmetic calculations. 

Learn to operate duplicating and audio-visual equipment. 

Understand and follow oral and written directions. 

Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. 

Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. 

Work independently.

 

EXPERIENCE:

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required

knowledge and abilities is qualifying.

Experience:

Some experience working with children is desirable.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Proof of HS Graduation (Provide one of the following documents: HS Diploma or HS Transcript showing a date of graduation or GED or Higher Degree)

 

Completed at least two years of study at an institution of higher education, or obtained an associates (or higher) degree, or demonstrated through the passing of the District NCLB Compliance test.

 

Possession of a valid California Driver’s License.

 

Fingerprint and TB clearance.

 

Successful completion of an oral interview.

 

Passage of approved written Instructional Aide I district test.
