LEARNING SUPPORT SPECIALIST

 Purpose Statement

Performs intensive family oriented learning support duties within the context of a multidisciplinary team, and works to ensure that all students are healthy and engaged in a safe school environment.  Works cooperatively with District-wide personnel, families, students and community agencies to increase student achievement.

Essential Functions

  •  Work collaboratively with academic and learning support staff to identify students’ needs for education, health, social services, and other support resources
  •  Provide case management services in conjunction with the family support team model for students; work with the family support team to do assessments, linking, monitoring, evaluation, and case planning
  •  Collaborate with community organizations to support students and families; work with community-based service providers to identify needs and determine case management plans
  •  Serve as a source of information for school personnel concerning community resources such as educational, recreational, protective and therapeutic services available for children and their families
  •  Assist students and families in accessing school and community services by providing instruction in self-advocacy, including completion of complex forms and applications
  •  Make appropriate referrals of families to public or private community resources for assistance and works cooperatively with them
  •  Collaborate with district staff and community service providers to identify and address gaps in service
  •  Maintain accurate and up-to-date, computer-based documentation of services provided.
  •  Make home visits and other field visits as needed
  •  Participate in staff development activities; attend county and community meetings that address the needs of students and families

 Job Requirements:  Minimum Qualifications

     Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

         SKILLS are required to perform multiple tasks with an occasional need to upgrade  skills due to changing job requirements.  Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions for the job include: ability to direct, gather and provide input, to support and engage students in a healthy and safe school environment.

        KNOWLEDGE is required of: basic case management, diversity in academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds; Community Resources; State Education Code; District policies and rules; operation of technology and related software; and understanding of written and oral instructions. 

       ABILITY is required to: listen and be flexible in working with others in multidisciplinary teams; communicate and problem solve to analyze issues, create plans of action and reach solutions; use AERIES CSIS; prepare and deliver presentations.

Responsibility

         Responsibilities include working without direct supervision; providing information and/or advising other persons; and operating within a defined budget and/or financial guidelines.  Utilization of resources from other work units is required to perform the job's functions.  There is an opportunity to impact the organization's services.

Working Environment

         The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; some stooping, kneeling, crouching and/or crawling; some reaching, and handling.  Generally, the job requires 30% sitting, 50% walking and 20% standing. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations, a generally hazard free environment, and in a clean atmosphere.

 ExperienceJob Related Experience is desired.

 EducationBachelor’s degree or equivalent.

 OtherBilingual speaking skills desirable.
