EUREKA UNION SCHOOL DISTRICT CLASSIFIED JOB DESCRIPTION HEALTH ASSISTANT II RANGE 36 Responsibility: The job of Health Assistant II is done for the purpose/s of providing specialized health care procedures as needed for designated students in the classroom and other school areas; assists a teacher(s) or other certificated employee(s) in providing curriculum instruction to students (children/adults); performs related duties as required and/or directions as may be requested by assigned administrator. Essential Functions: 1. Provide specialized health care procedures as the needs of the students dictate and as approved and defined by the State Department of Education and Health Services and as prescribed by the school nurse. 1b. Participates in the administration of nursing care described in Emergency Care Plans, Individualized Health Service Plans, Individualized Education Plans or other written plans of care for students under the direction of the credentialed school nurse. 2. Provide first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and other physical health care procedures including, but not limited to: limitation care, seizures, cardiac problems, hypoglycemic reactions, menstrual cycle needs and safe handling of students with chronic infectious diseases. 3. Move students to/from the floor, changing tables and wheelchairs. 4. Assist in lifting students from wheelchairs and/or adaptive equipment. 5. Place and position/reposition students in therapeutic equipment; push wheelchairs and assist with walkers. 6. Assist students with clothing, possessions or personal care such as feeding, washing and toileting and changing diapers. 7. Sanitize and clean portable toilets and supplies. 8. Complete accident and follow up reports. 9. Dispense prescribed medication following approved protocols, record medication and treatment given 10. May provide medical supervision to student being transported on school bus. 11. Provide services and related duties of the health program: i.e., clerical, ordering materials, maintain medical records related to the health status of students. 12. Use a variety of study aides and techniques to reinforce skills. 13. Design and prepare bulletin boards, displays of student work, charts, forms or other teaching aids. 14. Participate in behavior management plans. 15. Prepare a variety of instructional materials. 16. Assist with or operate a variety of audio-visual equipment such as VCR’s, tape recorders, or other learning machines. 17. Organize work areas and assemble learning materials, study aides, supplies, or assignment folders. 18. May order supplies, forms, instructional and audiovisual materials; may participate in field trips; may supervise students in cafeteria, playground or bus loading. 19. Provide transportation of students in a county provided vehicle, as needed. 20. Necessary participation in field trips may require extended days for the employee as directed by supervisor. Duties/Responsibilities: Responsibilities include: Health care and classroom instruction. When not attending to the specialized health care needs of assigned student/students, assists the certificated employee in providing curriculum instruction and with other duties to assist the School Nurse. Provide first aid and life saving techniques to students without direct nursing supervision. There is an opportunity to impact the Organization’s services. Qualifications: 1. SKILLS are required to perform non-technical tasks with an occasional need to upgrade skills due to changing job conditions. Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: operate modern office equipment including computers; operate a motor vehicle safely; communicate clearly and accurately, both orally and in writing. 2. KNOWLEDGE is required of basic and practices of first aid, CPR, Universal Precautions, blood borne pathogens and communicable diseases; principles and procedures of record keeping and reporting; alphabetical, numerical and subject matter filing systems; English usage, spelling, vocabulary, grammar and punctuation; safe driving principles and practices. 3. ABILITY is required to respond appropriately in emergency situations; read and comprehend medical terms; remain calm in stressful situations; understand, manage and relate to students who have behavioral problems, learning and physical disabilities; adapt to individual needs of teachers and students and work with interruptions; work harmoniously with students, staff, parents and guardians; be dependable and punctual; recognize the first aid and health needs of students and make decisions to appropriate solutions, report changing medical status to the RN. Education/Experience: Experience: Any combination of training, education and experience, which demonstrates ability to perform the duties described. Experience with students or groups of children or work experiences in a medically related field. Education: Must possess a current California Licensed Vocational Nurse License in addition to the equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade. Ability to obtain specialized training in health, first aid, CPR, emergency medical services, or a related field. Must possess an Associates Degree, or have completed 48 semester units of college coursework, or pass a paraprofessional test as defined under the No Child Left Behind Act. Required Testing: Certificates & Licenses: Valid licensed LVN or RN License Valid First Aid Card Valid CPR Certification Physical Requirements: 1. Position regularly performs heavy physical labor requiring ability to lift, carry, push, pull and move heavy objects or materials. 2. Great physical demand for strength and endurance. 3. Physical functions involve heavy physical exertion. 4. Lifting over 50 lbs. or carrying any object over 25 lbs. The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions requires the following physical demands: ability to lift 50 pounds; sufficient strength to lift non-ambulatory students, lift and move adaptive equipment, and physically restrain and control a student up to 150 pounds with assistance; sufficient body movement and mobility to demonstrate gross motor activities, climb in and out of vehicles, sufficient vision to read printed materials; sufficient hearing to hear normal and telephone conversations; manual dexterity to write and use telephone and other business/office machines; some carrying, pushing and/or pulling; some stooping, kneeling, crouching and/or crawling; significant reaching, handling, fingering and/or feeling. Exposure to chemicals, medications and communicable diseases and viruses.
