Alum Rock Union Elementary School District


Title: DIRECTOR, CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION

Reports to: Assistant Superintendent, Educational Services

Functions: To direct the development, coordination, articulation, and evaluation of the District’s K-8 curriculum and instructional programs.


Performance Responsibilities:

• Be knowledgeable of current and best practices in curriculum and developing instruction.
• Implement a comprehensive district model for K-8 curriculum that supports State requirements and meets District needs.
• Review, revise, and modify curriculum according to the needs of the students and the Board of Education guidelines.
• Provide leadership in the development of school plans.
• Identify and assist sites in implementing appropriate K-8 curricular programs and instructional strategies that result in increased student achievement that integrate multi-culturalism and support the learning of English.
• Coordinate the District’s core curriculum with curriculum for students with special needs, including special education, English language learners, and GATE.
• Assist the assessment department in evaluating the success of curricular programs.
• Oversee the alignment of District curriculum with State Frameworks and Standards; coordinate the revision of District standards and curriculum guides in assigned areas.
• Represent the District at county, state and national level activities and committees as appropriate.
• Work directly with schools to assess and provide for curricular and instructional needs.
• Seek and apply for grant funding and monitor grant implementation and reporting.
• Direct the selection, adoption, purchase, distribution and implementation of instructional materials, library collections, and instructional software.
• Oversee the district and school site library programs.
• Design and provide training and work sessions for administrators, teachers, classified personnel, Board members, and parents in curriculum and instruction.
• Provide leadership for district curriculum and instruction committees and support all district committees in the area of curriculum and instruction.



• Oversee on-line electronic communication tools for teachers and administrators that support curriculum and instruction.
• Oversee the production, publication, and distribution of curricular publications.
• Maintain and monitor budgets within the Department of Curriculum and Instruction.
• Supervise and evaluate all certificated and classified staff in the department
• Review and approve all field trip requests in accordance with District Policy.
• Use technology for the following: word processing, databases, and spreadsheets.
• Plan, develop, monitor, provide training and coordinate all aspects of District intervention programs.
• Oversee all aspects of the District GATE, English Language Development and Special Education Programs.
• Maintain SIP budgets and provide guidance for development and implementation of school plans.
• Visit schools on a regular basis.
• Participate in labor negotiations as needed.
• Attend all Board and district meetings as appropriate.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Appropriate California Administrative Credential preferred
• Any combination equivalent to a Master’s Degree in education, administration, or related field.
• Three years of successful teaching experience at the appropriate level(s).
• School site administration experience at the appropriate level(s).
• Curriculum and instructional training desirable.
• Demonstrated leadership skills and organizational skills.
• Demonstrated written and oral communication skills.
• Ability to relate well to all members of the educational community.
• Experience in an urban district with diverse student population desirable.
• Experience in curriculum development, educational planning or related field.

Salary Placement: Administrative Salary Schedule Placement

Work Year: 220 days

Evaluation: Performance of this position will be evaluated in accordance with the administrative evaluation process
