Upland Unified School District ATHLETIC TRAINER BASIC FUNCTION Under general supervision, to provide athletic training services to student athletes under the direction of the team physician or by written referral from a physician and in accordance with state athletic training practice act; to provide preventive and emergency care for athletic and physical education injuries; to provide treatment and rehabilitation; and to do related duties as required. Athletic Training Services: The management and provision of care of injuries to a physically active person as defined in the state practice act with the direction of a licensed physician. The term includes the rendering of emergency care, development of injury prevention programs and providing appropriate preventative and devices for the physically active person. The term also includes the assessment, management, treatment, rehabilitation and recondition of the physically active person whose conditions are within the professional preparation and education of a certified athletic trainer. The term also includes the use of modalities such as mechanical stimulation, heat, cold, light, air, water, electricity sound, massage and the use of therapeutic exercises, reconditioning exercise and fitness programs. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES Works closely with the team doctor and other doctors in safeguarding the physical condition of Participant (E); Maintain appropriate general treatment orders to be reviewed annually and approved by the team Physician (E); Provide athletic training services for all home athletic contests and away varsity football games (E); If a conflict arises between an away varsity football game and a home contest, the varsity football event will supersede (E); Act as liaison between family physicians and specialists, the school district, athletes and their parents (E); Maintain accurate records of injuries, treatments and provide insurance claim forms for sports injuries treated by a physician (E); Develop and maintain a budget for the athletic training program (E); Schedule and be present for pre-participation sports physicals (E); Provide the coaches and athletic director with a list of athletes medically eligible to compete under district and state rules and regulations (E); Assist the athletic director as requested (E); Instruct and oversee student trainers in the care and prevention of athletic injuries (E); Performs related duties as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of: Basic math calculations and record keeping; First Aid procedures including CPR, bandaging, heat, cold and sound methods; Practices of physical therapy; Physical fitness training, exercise and nutrition; Basic technology skills and usage. Ability to: Administer all forms of approved physical therapy and first aid; Evaluate injuries, apply treatment and be aware of adverse effects which can occur with complications; Follow professional and administrative directions and instructions explicitly; Communicate effectively and work cooperatively with coaches and athletes; Operate whirlpool, exercise and rehabilitation machines, ultrasound, hydrocollator steam packs, cold applications and other therapeutic items in treating disabilities under prescription; Maintain accurate records; Work independently and under pressure; Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with staff, students, administrators and the public; Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy; Exercise independent judgment; Maintain consistent, punctual and regular attendance. EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS Education: High school diploma or equivalent; Bachelors Degree desirable; Training in athletic care and prevention of athletic injuries. Experience: One year experience in the prevention and treatment of athletic injuries; Advance study in athletic training may be substituted for a part of the experience. Licenses/Certificates: Certified Athletic Trainer certification (ATC); Valid First Aid certificate; Valid CPR Card. Valid California driver’s license, a good driving record and the ability to maintain insurability under the District’s vehicle insurance policy. WORKING CONDITIONS WHICH MAY OCCUR Indoor and outdoor work environment; Driving a vehicle to conduct work; Perform job duties on a flexible daily schedule. Physical Abilities: Sitting, walking or standing for extended periods of time; Lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects weighing up to 40 pounds; Near and far visual acuity to monitor student activities; Bending at the waist, stooping, kneeling or crouching; Dexterity of hands and fingers. Hazards Potential contact with blood; Subject to exposure to communicable or infectious diseases.
