Overview

When you join the team at Nevada Virtual Academy, you join a team of dedicated professionals working throughout the state in a blended environment to ensure the success of our families and students who are using the K12 curriculum to meet their educational needs and goals, grades K-12. We are committed to providing the highest level of education to every student every day.

Summary: 

Our teachers are responsible for creating interactive and engaging lessons that ensure student mastery of common core state standards. The teaching position is set on a 10 month schedule.

The Special Education Teachers are responsible for ensuring that students achieve mastery of learning objectives. They provide guidance, instruction and support, manage the learning process and focus on students’ individual needs. Teachers monitor student progress through interactive lessons and daily assessments and they actively work with students and parents to advance each child’s learning.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Teach and monitor students Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with the potential to flex the weekday schedule to teach evenings and/or Saturday sessions upon assignment from administration.  Provide instruction in both online and face-to-face settings.

  • Teach from the academy or a designated remote location minimum three (3) days per week.
  • Integrate STEM content and writing performance tasks in all subject areas.
  • Collect, review, and provide feedback on student work samples.
  • Prepare students for state standardized tests. 
  • Required travel to proctor site-based testing throughout Nevada. 
  • Participate in professional development opportunities.  Remain current with educational trends and effectively implement new strategies.
  • Conduct regular conferences with parents/Learning Coaches and students to assess each student's progress.  Document conference details in a database.
  • Analyze data to identify student academic strengths and weaknesses.  Proactively track student progress and school attendance.
  • Provide Special Education services in accordance with the IEP and state regulations; submit required reports and documentation to administration.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of Assistive Technologies.
  • Facilitate IEP Teams for students with special needs.  Required participation and work with Response to Intervention teams for students involved in the Tier process.
  • Effectively manage time and respond to students, parents/Learning Coaches and NVVA staff via phone, e-mail or face-to-face within 24 hours.
  • Write and Implement student IEP; Monitor and report progress toward IEP Goals and Objectives; conduct assessments as needed for special education eligibility.
  • Compile and Maintain Special Education Compliance Files and maintain accurate special education records; keep detailed documentation from parent/student conferences.
  • Complete all activities required for compliance with IDEA.
  • Respond within 24 hours to student, parent and NVVA staff inquiries via phone and/or e-mail or face-to-face.
  • Participate in regular face-to-face staff meetings.
  • Travel and arrive a minimum of fifteen minutes early for all face-to-face and/or live sessions with staff or students.
  • Alert administrators of any concerns about student progress and/or truancy.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education/Experience: 

  • Bachelor’s degree and professional experience
  • 3+ years Teaching experience
  • Strong knowledge of IDEA requirements
  • Experience coordinating academically-oriented clubs and extracurricular activities as well as guiding adults and students

Certificates and Licenses:

  • Must possess a Nevada teaching license issued by the Nevada Department of Education
  • Hold an endorsement which is appropriate to the special education placement (i.e. K-12 Generalist Endorsement for Resource Room)
  • Meets Highly Qualified status under NCLB


Computer Skills:

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite; and experience using student information systems and/or other types of database software.  Experience moderating web meetings (Elluminate Blackboard, Webinar, WebEx) for small and large groups. Intermediate or advanced Excel skills required.

 Supervisory Responsibilities:

Employees will be working five days per week.   Ability to travel at least once per month within and between assigned geographic areas to support students, attend regularly scheduled meetings and participate in school activities.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
