Job Description / Essential Elements:    Print   

The Classroom Teacher provides an education program for scholars in grades K – 8 or in a combination thereof, assists in other school programs as assigned; creates a classroom environment favorable to learning and personal growth; establishes effective rapport with scholars; motivates scholars to develop skills, attitudes, and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation for further education; establishes good professional relationships with parents and co-workers.

 ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 -      Teach reading, language arts, social studies, mathematics, science, art, health, physical education, and music to scholars in a contained classroom, utilizing California State Standards and other appropriate learning activities and materials.

-      Develop weekly lesson plans and supplementary materials compatible with the school’s basic instructional philosophy and curriculum.

-      Identify scholar needs and cooperate with other professional staff members in assessing and helping scholars solve health, attitude, and learning problems.

-      Evaluate scholar’s academic and social growth, keep appropriate records, prepare progress reports, and communicate with parents on the individual scholar’s progress.

-      Conduct parent conferences when needed to discuss scholars’ individual progress

-       Administer group-standardized tests in accordance with school testing program.

-      Establish and maintain standards of scholar behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.

-      Provide individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil.

-      Select and requisition books and instructional supplies; maintain required inventory records.

-      Create an effective environment for learning through functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards, and interest centers.

-      Monitor classroom environment to ensure clean and safe conditions exist; notify Administrator of any unclean or unsafe classroom conditions.

-      Monitor classroom activities making scholars responsible for putting materials, supplies, tools, etc., safely and neatly away at the end of class session.

-      Guide scholars in citizenship and social responsibilities

-      Ensure a comfortable room environment through control of heating, lighting, and ventilation to the extent possible.

-      Supervise pupils in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day.

-      Serve on student yard duty and lunch duty as assigned.

-      Attend staff meetings and staff development  

-      Maintain professional competence through participation in in-service education activities or self-selected professional growth activities.

-      Promote student activities and participate in committees.

-      Perform other duties as assigned by Executive Director or designee

 EDUCATION, CERTIFICATE AND EXPERIENCE

Bachelor’s degree including all courses needed to meet credential requirements; appropriate California Teaching Credential; Cross-cultural Language and Academics Development (CLAD) Certification or Bilingual Cross-cultural Language and Academics Development (BLCAD) Certification or EL Authorization, NCLB Certificate of Compliance. One year successful teaching experience.

 REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE SKILLS & ABILITIES:

 Knowledge of:  California State Standards and Assessments

 Ability to:

 -      Design lesson plans using California State Standards

-      Effectively teach elementary level scholars

-      Organize and present ideas effectively in oral and written form

-      Make skillful decisions

-      Be flexible and adjust easily to change

-      Maintain order in the classroom

-      Work with aides, teacher assistants, and other paraprofessionals

-      Integrate technology into the course of study

-      Work under pressure and meet deadlines

-      Operate a PC computer, word processor, copier, FAX, other office machines

 PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT

 Ability to:

 Sit or stand for prolonged periods; occasionally walk, stand, stoop, bend, and reach over head; safely lift, carry, or push up to 35 pounds; respectively use fingers, both hands simultaneously; speak clearly and hear normal voice conversation, see small details, use a computer and telephone; work inside; make direct contact with public and other district staff, function well in occasional negative interpersonal situations; frequently work without direct guidance from supervisor, work with high volume and tight deadlines; successfully handle interruptions, public contact and multiple tasks
