Literacy Coach/Intervention Specialist
REPORTS TO: Administration
JOB SUMMARY: OCEAA’s Literacy Coach/Intervention Specialist is responsible for planning, coordinating and implementing a school-wide English and Spanish literacy and intervention program and coaching teachers in effective instructional strategies and curriculum development. Supervises work of classified employee(s) assigned to the literacy intervention program. This is a Teacher on Special Assignment position.
DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Duties of this position include but are not limited to:
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Teach reading intervention groups/provide intervention support during and after school.
- Train and support teachers in the implementation of research based reading practices and will monitor classroom literacy instruction and interventions.
- Serve as a support for modeling effective language arts lessons, working with teachers to provide professional development in language arts, and establishing vertical articulation in the school wide language arts program.
- Coordinate and train Instructional Aide(s)/After School teachers (as needed) to teach small groups of struggling readers and support after school reading intervention program.
- Assists teachers in evaluating and examining student assessment data, and refining intervention activities to address individual student needs.
- Collaborates with OCEAA team members to improve own and others’ instructional practices especially in literacy development; shares best practices.
- Researches and provides information and guidance regarding a range of effective and innovative literacy practices through various activities such as:
- Individual consultation and coaching sessions;
- Demonstration lessons with pre- and post-discussion/analysis;
- Observations and feedback.
- Leads the school’s Accelerated Reader independent reading program, supports teachers in using AR data and facilitates awards and recognitions.
- Actively participates in professional development activities, including: training sessions and working with the Instructional Leadership Team and administration; designs and leads professional development in literacy development.
- Works closely with classroom teachers to identify unique student needs; collaborates with team members to address learning challenges through developing and monitoring RtI and 504 plans.
- Demonstrates knowledge of and support of OCEAA’s mission, vision, two-way model, goals and philosophy, values, essential standards, LCAP (Local Control and Accountability Plan), policies and procedures, operating instructions, confidentiality standards and ethical behavior.
- Maintains paperwork consistently, appropriately and in a timely manner.
- Serves as Principal’s designee as needed.
- Directly supervises and evaluates instructional assistant(s).
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: An instructional leader committed to educational excellence with a demonstrated ability to use data to develop and meet program goals.
1. Required knowledge, skills and abilities:
- In-depth knowledge of best practices in literacy (and biliteracy) instruction, including interventions
- Knowledge of child cognitive development and different learning styles
- Knowledge of California Common Core State Standards
- Knowledge of curriculum development
- Knowledge of assessment and data analysis
- Ability and willingness to reflect and improve
- Ability to actively listen, creatively problems solve and build relationships with colleagues, parents, and community
- Ability to coach colleagues constructively, and foster a community of reflective practice
- Ability to maintain effective interpersonal relations using tact, patience, courtesy and create a service oriented environment
- Ability to be flexible and revise priorities based on requirements of school
- Ability to work with the public in a professional manner
- Basic computer literacy
- Flexibility to attend required/mandatory meetings on campus
- Ability to type 50 words per minute using both hands
- Ability to sit, stand, climb stairs, lifting up to 50 lbs., bend, pull, push, carry, walk and operate equipment
- A valid First Aid certificate issued by the American Red Cross, which includes CPR training
- Current Tuberculosis Test
2. Minimum educational level:
a. Bachelor’s degree
b. Valid California Teaching Credential
c. Conversational level Spanish required, BCLAD preferred
d. Specialist training in literacy required
3. Experience required:
a. 4+ successful years as a classroom teacher; demonstrated success in closing achievement the gaps in literacy.
b. 2+ successful years coordinating/providing literacy interventions.
SALARY: Based on experience/certificated salary schedule.
