Tutor
Program: Juvenile Day Reporting Center (JDRC)
Location: East Los Angeles (4822 Gleason Street Los Angeles, CA 90022)
Num. of Positions: 1 Hourly Rate: $15.00 per hour
Hour Per Week: 20 hours Schedule: Monday-Friday 2:00pm-6:00pm
POSITION SUMMARY:
Responsible for assisting and promoting students’ academic participation and success. Assist participants with educational skills including reading, phonics, comprehension, fluency, writing, grammar, vocabulary, spelling, and test taking skills to earn high school credits and enhance passing the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE).
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Provide group and individual tutoring services.
• Maintain a file for each student with the documents required by the contract.
• Promote daily attendance.
• Work with program coordinator and staff, deputy probation officers, school counselor, teachers, and parents in addressing successes and/or difficulties on a regular basis with the students.
• Submit required reports to the program coordinator along with all required backup.
• Must have excellent communication with program staff, teachers, school staff, parenting instructor, parents, probation officers, and students.
• Attend multi-disciplinary team (MDT) meetings.
• Support student enrichment activities.
• Promote a safe and nonjudgmental learning environment.
• Attend all necessary conferences and meetings.
• Perform related duties as required*
*Related duties as required are duties which may not be specifically listed in the class specification or position description, but which are within the general occupational series and responsibility level typically associated with the employee’s class of work.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
Must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age and have an Associate (AA) Degree.
A minimum of two (2) years’ experience working with at-risk or probation youth.
Must pass the required background check.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
• Ability to tutor Math and English, and other high school subjects
• Ability to communicate effectively in written and oral form
• Ability to maintain high level of confidentiality
• Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationship
• Ability to multitask several activities at once
• Ability to meet necessary deadlines
• Ability to use independent judgment and initiative
• Ability to direct and evaluate the assigned work
• Ability to plan short and long-range activities
• Ability to analyze and resolve problems
• Ability to come up with creative solutions to problems
• Display sensitivity, tact, and responsiveness in various situations and needs
• Ability to work with and engage high-risk youth
• Knowledge of basic human behavior and social science
