The German International School of Silicon Valley (GISSV) is a private school from Preschool through 12th Grade with a bilingual German-English educational program. Upon graduation, our students earn a German International Abitur and take part in all qualifications and exams needed for an American High School Diploma. ORGANIZATIONAL OVERVIEW

Founded in 1999, the German International School of Silicon Valley (GISSV) has a multicultural student body ranging from pre-school to grade 12.
Currently, GISSV has over 500 students with graduates who qualify for both European and American universities. Primary languages spoken at home by GISSV students include English, German, Spanish, Italian, Arabic, Korean, and Chinese. The school offers an academically rigorous bilingual program with quality instructors and small class sizes. GISSV is one of only five recognized German foreign schools in the United States and the only one offering a High School Diploma on the West Coast. Advantages of being accredited as a German foreign school include report cards recognized in Germany, accredited diplomas (Abitur and High School Diploma,) and ongoing financial and other forms of support from the German government.

POSITION OVERVIEW
The Business Manager manages and coordinates all of GISSV’s business operations to ensure the fiscal and operational effectiveness of the school and to support and enhance the educational mission. The Business Manager will serve on the senior management team and on a number of Board Committees and is expected to contribute to various projects as requested by the Head of School. This position works closely works closely with the Head of School in leading and managing the entire school and with all school constituencies in moving the school’s Strategic Plan forward and to provide assistance and leadership where needed.

LOCATION
This position is located at the Mountain View campus with travel to the Berkeley and San Francisco campuses about once per week.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
The Business Manager reports directly to the Head of School, supervises facilities maintenance staff and an administrative and accounting team

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

Finance and Accounting
  • Oversees all finance and accounting activities for the organization.
  • Appraises GISSV’s financial position, delivers monthly reports on the school’s financial stability, liquidity, and growth to the Head of School and the Board and responds to inquiries
  • Reviews cash flow positions
  • Leads the annual budget and quarterly forecasting process.
  • Secures financial and personnel support from the German government.
  • Works together with BVA/ZfA on the annual budget, complete statistics for the German Government to receive cash subsidies and funding of teacher’s position
Facilities
  • Responsible for further development of the school facilities at all three campus locations.
  • Supervises Facility Manager/Technician positions
Risk Management and Compliance
  • Responsibilities include supporting and contributing to safety program and training, emergency and crisis management plans, evaluating and managing insurance contracts and all federal, state and local reporting requirements.
  • Works with insurance advisors and brokers to insure that adequate, appropriate and cost effective insurance is in force, including public liability, property and casualty, directors and officers, and Workers Compensation.
General Administration
  • Oversees and manages the activities of direct reports, conduct performance reviews and provide appropriate training and development opportunities.
  • Maintains an effective system of internal management controls throughout the school.
  • Builds a strong partnership with Department Heads to ensure that the educational goals of GISSV are in sync with the business/fiscal goals of the school.
  • Participates on the following Board committees: Finance, Development and Facilities.
  • Leads Administrative Team meetings, attend monthly board meetings, appropriate sub-committee meetings and society meetings (two per year)
  • Serves as liaison between the faculty, its administration, the Board of Directors and German Government agency and German Consulate General. Contact to local authorities, legal advisors, banks, etc.
  • Performs other duties/projects as assigned by the Head of School.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; Master’s Degree in Business Administration preferred
  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in a non-profit environment, preferably at an independent school
  • Advanced reading and writing skills in English required
  • Additional reading and writing skills in German preferred
  • Extremely strong communications and presentation skills
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and relate well with other administrators, faculty, staff, parents, students, and representatives from the business community.
  • Working knowledge of business accounting policies, procedures, practices and software programs.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills, with a strong customer-service focus
  • Ability to think and plan strategically and creatively.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Ability to supervise and manage multiple functions and activities.
  • Detail oriented and organized and able to complete projects in a timely manner.
  • Collaborative leadership style: Desire and ability to be a “team player” and a constructive communicator
  • Ability to perform multiple tasks and maintain a calm and pleasant demeanor
  • Flexibility in adjusting work routine to accommodate unexpected circumstances
