MENTAL HEALTH THERAPIST II

 

 

BASIC FUNCTION:

Under the direction of the Coordinator-Mental Health, provide direct mental health services including mental health assessment, counseling, consultation, mental health evaluations, treatment and collateral case management for students, parents, and families; perform individual and group counseling therapy for students; serve as a resource to school site principals, service providers, students, parents and staff as assigned; train, provide work direction to Mental Health Therapy Interns.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Provide direct mental health services including counseling, consultation, mental health evaluations, treatment, mental health assessments and collateral case management for students, parents, and families; provide clinical assessments, diagnosis and propose treatment plans for student with emotional or behaviors needs; conduct clinical interviews to gather information, determine the appropriate need, and develop diagnostic information.

 

Perform family therapy services to achieve student goals for treatment in a family setting; counsel family members to assist them in understanding, dealing with, and supporting students.

 

Lead and facilitate individual and group therapy services; teach students coping and social skills.

 

Serve as a resource to school site principals as assigned and discuss the treatment progress of assigned students and implementation strategies; act as a resource to teachers, parents and others in area of expertise; communicate between staff and families.

 

Train and provide work direction to Mental Health Therapy Interns; document and confirm hours; oversee Interns caseloads; make treatment recommendations; monitor and approve daily activity and review documentation.

 

Provide crisis intervention and individual counseling for students on clinical issues such as treatment and linkage to medication evaluation, suicide and homicidal ideation, depression, impulse control; implement established treatment plans; observe and record student’s behavior to assure effectiveness of plan.

 

Consult with school psychologist, school site administrator and staff, district administrators, teachers, paraprofessionals, and parents/guardians regarding students’ mental health needs; care coordination and meeting treatment plan goals.

 

Prepare reports and correspondence as directed; maintains a variety of documentation, such as charting observed behaviors, clinical notes, behavior/emotional progress, treatment goals progress reports, referral forms and other data; perform any required documentation of incidents as witness to as necessary; maintain confidentiality of records relating to students.

 

Provide summary treatment plans at the request of clients and parents; update school staff and service providers on student progress as it is legally, ethically appropriate and in the best interest of the student as determined by the Mental Health Therapist.

 

Participate in meetings with the IEP (Individualized Education Plan), SST, Case Conference teams to discuss student performance and care coordination plans; monitor treatment and care coordination plans as per IEP and in accordance with IEP timelines.

 

Serve as a mandated Child Protective Services (CPS) and Adult/Elder Abuse reporter.

 

Assist staff in the development of behavior support plans and functional behavior analyses.

 

Coordinate with caseworkers, probation officers, community and support services, and appropriate referrals; work with other agencies to obtain information and coordinate services.

 

Complete paperwork to support mental health billing in a timely manner; assist with new contracts for MediCal billing.

 

Attend and participate in meetings, conferences, seminars and professional development trainings; plan and conduct in-service mental health and behavior intervention education trainings for non-mental health trained staff; conduct and facilitate mental health education trainings for students a classroom or TEP setting.

 

Operate a variety of office equipment, a computer and assigned software; drive a vehicle to conduct work at various sites.

 

Collaborate with assigned staff to develop systems for managing crises in the classroom; act as student advocate in order to coordinate required services or to resolve emergency problems in crisis situations.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES: TEP PROGRAM MENTAL HEALTH THREAPISTS

 

Maintain ancillary and supplementary programs for assigned students such as community service projects; gardening therapy services, group cooking classes and student talent shows.

 

Provide coverage for staff in the absence of the rehabilitation specialist and or other special education staff as assigned.

 

OTHER DUTIES:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

 

Any combination equivalent to:  master's degree  or higher in counseling, psychology, clinical social work, or a related field and two years of experience in a private or governmental agency providing direct mental health related services to students including identifying patient mental health needs, using community resources, and student advocacy.

Continuation of the position is contingent upon funding.*** SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Mental Health Program Manager is responsible for the administration of the district’s mental health services. The Mental Health Therapist II provides clinical assessment, treatment and consultation to students, parents, and staff. The Mental Health Therapist II works under the clinical direction of Mental Health Program Manager, and acts as a resource to school site principals as assigned. All work is performed within the limits of licensing and professional standards and adheres to California Education Code and regulations. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Minimum Qualifications: • Two (2) years of experience in a private or governmental agency providing direct mental health related services to students, which should include identifying patient mental health needs, using community resources, and student advocacy. • Possession of a Master’s or Doctorate degree in a field of study approved by the California State Board of Behavioral Sciences or Board of Psychology. • Licensed by the California State Board of Behavioral Sciences or the California Board of Psychology as either a Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) or Clinical Psychologist (LCP).
