SANTA ANA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT ACCOUNTING TECHNICIAN BASIC FUNCTION: Under the direction of the Manager of Accounting or other administrator, perform the more difficult and complex accounting work in keeping and reviewing the District's financial and statistical records; maintain account¬ability for a particular set of accounts involving complex accounting procedures; assist in supervising a major accounting recordkeeping function. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: Incumbents in this class perform complex and difficult accounting and, in carrying out their assignments, apply a thorough knowledge of specific types of accounts, such as food service revenue, student body or building construction and maintenance contracts. Incumbents may serve as the final check on numerous financial transactions. Incumbents perform with considerable independence and provide work direction to other accounting and clerical personnel. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: Assume auditing, processing and recording responsibility for a major District financial activity. E Establish and maintain accounting journals and ledgers reflecting revenues, expenditures, transfers and adjustments for various funds and accounts; may input data into computer terminal; develop and print computer reports. E Prepare periodic financial statements; prepare and submit reports as required covering assigned accounts, verify for accuracy. E Assure accuracy of assigned accounts; audit accounts as necessary to assure correct account classification and proper accounting controls. E Receive District income, including cash, monitor bank deposits and account properly for student body, food services and other District revenues. E Interpret and apply appropriate accounting rules, regulations and contract provisions; maintain contact with District personnel and others; and respond to questions regarding financial account¬ing procedures and transactions. E Complete difficult account reconciliations as assigned. E Provide training and direction to other accounting personnel as needed and audit their work for accuracy. Perform related duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: KNOWLEDGE OF: The terminology used in the type of accounts assigned. Fiscal practices and procedures. Office machines and filing systems. Financial recordkeeping procedures. KNOWLEDGE OF: (CONTINUED) School District organization, operations and objectives. Applicable sections of State Education Code. Technical aspects of field of specialty. ABILITY TO: Perform a variety of complex and difficult clerical and recordkeeping work requiring exercise of judgment and knowledge of subject matter. Operate a variety of office machines, including computers and calculators. Perform difficult accounting calculations. Communicate clearly oral and written directions concerning accounting procedures. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. Meet schedules and time lines. Perform the essential functions of the job. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school and one year of additional college-level course work in accounting and three years of progressively responsible financial recordkeeping experience. WORKING CONDITIONS: ENVIRONMENT: Office environment. May demand meeting deadlines with severe time constraints. PHYSICAL ABILITIES: Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard and other office equipment. Seeing to read a variety of materials. Hearing and speaking to exchange information. Sitting for extended periods of time at a computer terminal/system. Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching to file materials.
