Jurupa Unified School District GENERAL MAINTENANCE JOURNEYMAN DEFINITION Under general direction to perform a variety of journey-level construction, maintenance and repair assignments in one or more of the building trades, including masonry, cement finishing, and welding; to perform a variety of highly skilled tasks in other, related trades; and to work independently or with assistance from other workers. The classification of General Maintenance Journeyman is differentiated from other related maintenance classifications in that journey level skill is expected in masonry, welding, and cement finish work. It is further differentiated from other maintenance classifications in that independent judgment and a high degree of skill is required in recognizing and solving problems or needs relating to construction and maintenance, including the ability to read, interpret, and if necessary, modify blueprints and other drawings, to meet the needs of the task at hand. The same high degree of judgment and skill is expected in deciding appropriate procedures in completing a majority of job assignments. Individuals in this classification may be assisted by other workers in completing various tasks. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Under general direction, performs journeyman level work in completing the following kinds of assignments: · Installs, replaces, builds and repairs chain link and wrought iron fencing and gates. · Mixes and applies plaster including surface preparation. · Excavates, makes subgrades with use of backhoe and related heavy equipment, and builds forms for concrete work. · Applies/installs/finishes tile, brick, and cement; and performs other tasks relating to masonry and cement work, as needed. · Loads, transports, sets up and breaks down scaffolding for upper level work, including ceilings and the installation and repair of flagpoles. · Plans and performs journey level arc and acetylene welding; Chips or grinds off excess weld, slag, or splatter; and performs sheet metal work other welding related work as needed. Independently performs at a highly skilled level of work in completing the following kinds of assignments: · Installs, maintains and repairs a variety of roofing materials and equipment. · Alters, repairs, or constructs articles and structures of wood, partitions, counters, doors, etc.; performs mill and cabinet work as necessary; fits doors, windows, sashes and screens; operates woodworking machinery and performs other duties as relating to carpentry, as needed. · Uses brush or spray gun in applying paint and varnish to wood, metal, glass and other surfaces; scrapes, sands, fills or in other manner prepares surfaces for painting or repainting; applies under and finish coats and performs other duties relating to painting, as needed. · Installs water piping, sewer mains and laterals; repairs and replaces pipes, valves, fittings, ball cocks and other fixtures; packs faucets; cleans out drain obstructions in water and sewer systems and performs other duties relating to plumbing, as needed. · Installs and repairs ceramic tile on walls and floors; prepares surfaces, cuts, sets, grouts and cleans tile; installs and repairs floors; makes all repairs to work surfaces; measures and cuts tile, both wet cuts and cold cuts. · Installs and repairs window and door frames and mold areas; and measures, cuts and installs glass. · Keeps time, labor and materials records as needed. · Drives a service vehicle in performance of job duties Personnel Services (over) GENERAL MAINTENANCE JOURNEYMAN LICENSE REQUIREMENT Possession of a valid, appropriate California Driver’s License. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of: Methods, materials, tools and equipment used in a variety of trades, with an emphasis on masonry, welding and cement finish work; basic math; safe driving practices; safe practice in the operation of equipment and tools. Ability to: Read and follow written instructions and blueprints; Understand and follow oral instructions; Perform journey-level maintenance and repair work; Work with minimum supervision; Use independent judgment in selecting proper maintenance and repair procedures; Perform heavy manual labor; Do the daily requirements of the job willingly; Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; Drive automotive equipment safely and in accordance with traffic laws; Read and understand handwritten or typed documents, instructions, the display screen or various equipment and machines, and blueprints and schematics; Communicate effectively; Stand, stoop, kneel, bend and walk; Climb slopes, stairs, steps and ladders; Lift, carry, push and pull heavy objects; Accomplish tasks at various elevated heights in a safe and effective manner; Accomplish tasks in restricted spaces in a safe and effective manner; Accomplish tasks with chemical agents in a safe and effective manner; Demonstrate manual dexterity, and steadiness and stability of hand movement necessary to perform fine maintenance procedures in a safe and effective manner; Operate both manual and power hand tools in a safe and effective manner; Operate a variety of industrial or motor vehicles, equipment and tools associated with building repair, maintenance, preventive maintenance and construction trades in a safe and effective manner; Maintain steady, regular attendance. Experience: Four years of skilled maintenance work specializing in at least one of the trades, with an emphasis on welding, masonry, or cement finish work. Education: Equivalent to completion of high school. Personal Qualities: Adaptability and flexibility; mature attitude; good judgment; dependability; reliability; highly motivated.
