Pay Information
The salary range for this Assistant Professor level position is $5,389.42 – $7,068.05 per month. Note that all new faculty hired by the SDCCD start at the Assistant Professor level. The highest monthly base starting salary would be $7,068.05 with a PhD and 1 year full-time prior teaching experience. Overload assignments are paid based on contract parity using the Adjunct/Overload College Classroom and Non-Classroom, Schedules B and C. Salary placement is based solely upon education and experience as outlined in the AFT Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement, and it is non-negotiable. Annual Salaries will be recalculated for service less than a full academic year based on Education Code §87815, any required adjustment will be made on the first pay period. Travel reimbursement for interviewees traveling more than 200 miles, one-way, will be paid according to geographic location (see SDCCD Travel Stipend Policy, Rev 7/14/2011). Assistant Professors may earn tenure after 4 years and promote to Associate Professor.
With promotions through Associate and Professor levels based upon mastery in the field, teaching of that knowledge, a PhD or equivalent, successful evaluations and tenure track experience, the top range would be $11,086.15. Applications are now being accepted for two positions of Assistant Professor, History, beginning Fall 2015 (August 17, 2015) at San Diego Mesa College. Interviews will tentatively occur between April 9 and April 13, 2015. While the current vacancies are at Mesa College, applicants should understand that they are subject to any District facility at the option of the Chancellor.
Major Responsibilities
Primary responsibility for the first position is the teaching of United States colonial and early national history, though the ability to also teach post-1877 U.S. history is desired. Primary responsibility for the second position is the teaching of United States history since 1877, though the ability to also teach pre-1877 U.S. history is desired. Depending upon the qualifications and experience of the successful candidates and the needs of the Department, other responsibilities may include teaching courses in Women’s History (U.S.), Native American History, and/or U.S. History from the Asian American Perspective. Each assignment will be for 15 class hours per week, and may include day, evening and Saturday classes. Additional responsibilities of Mesa College tenured/tenure-track faculty include maintaining regular office hours for student advisement, curriculum review and development, serving on College and District committees, and participating in various departmental and college activities.
Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Degrees must be from regionally accredited institutions.
1. Master’s degree in History; OR,
2. Bachelor’s degree in History AND Master’s degree in Political Science, Humanities, Geography, Area Studies, Women’s Studies, Social Science, or Ethnic Studies; OR,
3. Possession of a California Community College Instructor Credential (valid for life) in History; OR,
4. The equivalent.
Desired Qualifications
DESIRED QUALIFICATION
Ph.D.in History from a regionally accredited institution.
The successful candidate should demonstrate evidence of:
• Historiographical and subject matter competency.
• Completion of appropriate graduate level coursework in History.
• Ability to teach effectively by demonstrating a working knowledge of learning styles and teaching techniques.
• Recent teaching experience in United States History at the lower-division college level and the ability to fairly and effectively evaluate student performance.
• Experience in the development and/or review of courses and curriculum.
• Effective oral communication and writing ability.
• Continued professional growth in History.
• Experience with, or willingness to explore, innovative teaching methodologies.
• Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working • relationships with others.
• Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, including persons with disabilities.
