Position Details
The Dean of Students at New Horizons Charter Academy K-7 School will work with the school’s Executive Administrator/Principal to ensure that all students demonstrate dramatic student achievement gains and internalize the school’s values.  This individual will also help lead the school’s efforts to create a positive, structured, consistent, caring, and disciplined school culture.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Working closely with Executive Administrator/Principal to establish a positive, structured, achievement-oriented, and creative school culture.
  • Supporting teachers to hold all students to high and consistent behavioral expectations.
  • Serving as the point person for dealing with behavioral discipline.
  • Acting as a resource to teachers in their instructional practice, especially as it relates to issues of discipline, relationships with students, classroom management, and school culture.
  • Assisting teachers, students, and parents in the effective creation and implementation of individual behavior plans.
  • Leading staff efforts to ensure all students have excellent attendance and arrive at school on time, and working aggressively with students and parents to ensure excellent attendance.
  • Helping to reinforce the effective use of a school-wide behavior plan.
  • Ensuring that the physical environment of the school reinforces school culture and facilitates student achievement.
  • Being highly present and visible during school hours, relentlessly ensuring the school has an exceptional school culture.
  • Proactively circulating throughout classrooms and hallways during the day, to gain valuable context on student behavior and help support positive school culture.
  • Monitoring behavioral pull-out and in-school suspensions.
  • Serving as the on site testing coordinator responsible for administering and overseeing the school's standardized testing, including ordering, distributing, and collecting all testing materials and properly training test proctors and internal benchmark testing.
  • Modeling the school’s values and the standard for professional behavior.
  • Supervising nutrition, lunch, in-between class transitions, enrichment, and dismissal, making sure students are always where they are supposed to be and ensuring a professional school culture at these times.
  • Keeping accurate student discipline records, documenting all conferences, suspensions, and phone calls for behavior.
  • Overseeing operational compliance items (i.e. School Safety Plan)
  • Develop and monitor comprehensive invention plan that is connected to Multi-Tiered Systems of Support and Response to Intervention Model
  • Coordinate, monitor and follow SST Process for student success
  • Perform Informal Observations of classroom instruction
  • Assist in implementation of Blended Learning Instructional Model
  • Act as Administrative Designee during absence of Principal

 

Qualifications

  • Drive to improve the minds and lives of students in and out of the classroom.
  • Belief and alignment with NHCA’s mandala words.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, and strong interpersonal skills with students, parents, colleagues, and community members.
  • Understanding of the nuances of urban school environments and school culture.
  • Bachelor’s degree is required; a Master’s degree is preferred.
  • Administrative Credential
  • Minimum of two years teaching experience in an urban district or charter school setting.
  • Experience with integration of Technology within the daily instruction
  • Well-versed with Microsoft Office Products, Digital Content, SMARTBoards
  • Spanish language fluency a plus.

Ability to work long hours, including a 7:30a.m.start time and a departure time consistent with school and business needs but typically no earlier than 5:00p.m. and to support the school's extracurricular programs and events, including those that occur after school hours.

The Dean of School Climate of New Horizons Charter Academy must be a strong leader who is committed to helping all students achieve at maximum academic levels and to establish this campus as a high performing charter school. The Dean of Students must be willing to supervise all aspects of the school systems. New Horizons Charter Academy is a 11th-year, independent charter school in the LAUSD area. The school is located in North Hollywood, California, in the San Fernando Valley. It currently serves 300 students, Grades K - 8.
