COLLEGE/CAREER CENTER TECHNICIAN

Purpose Statement

The job of Career Center Technician exists for the purposes of providing students, parents and staff with information relating to career and/or educational opportunities; administering and interpreting career assessment tools; maintaining knowledge of pre/post high school program eligibility requirements; developing plans and/or providing information regarding students’ goals; and documenting students’ school and community activities for scholarship applications.

Essential Functions


Maintains current information relating to career training pre-requisites, job descriptions and entry level job requirements, salaries, working conditions, etc., of occupational fields for the purpose of assuring availability of such information for use by counselors, teachers, students and parents.

Schedules guest speakers and arranges college and vocational presentations for the purposes of providing information to students regarding various college and vocational opportunities.

Conducts graduate surveys and follow-up studies for purposes of gathering and disseminating information relative to post-secondary educational and vocational activities.

Creates written materials (e.g. reports, memos, mailings, handbooks, etc.) for the purposes of documenting activities, providing written reference and/or conveying information.

Promotes scholarship, college and career opportunities for the purpose of assisting students in their transition to post high school options.


Responds to inquiries of staff, other educational institutions, the public, parents and/or students for the purpose of providing information and/or directions.

Coordinates financial aid workshops, career and job fairs, college fairs, scholarship nights, academic merit awards, military academy nights, and other district wide evening events and presentations for the purpose of providing occupational programs, the Career Centers’ services, and other post high school opportunities.

Documents students’ performance and/or other activities for the purpose of providing school credits for outside work experience, volunteer service and/or scholarships.

Enters student attendance data and grades into the automated student information system for purposes of maintaining records of attendance and grades.

Issues student work permits for the purpose of complying with requirements of the State of California Department of Labor.

Obtains data from the automated student information system for purposes of verifying student information.

Assists students in determining career and/or educational opportunities.

Participates in various meetings for the purpose of receiving and/or providing information.

Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.

Attends annual career technician conferences, College Board conferences, and monthly ROP meetings for purposes of acquiring and providing information relative to college and career opportunities.


Job Requirements: - Minimum Qualifications

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

SKILLS are required to perform multiple technical tasks with an occasional need to upgrade skill due to changing job conditions. Specific skill is required to interpret instructions and assist students in comprehending compliance requirements for completion of various applications.

KNOWLEDGE is required to use automated student information system, to perform basic math including calculation of fractions, percents and/or ratios, read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats and/or present information before groups; and understand multiple step instructions.

ABILITY is required to schedule a significant number of activities; gather, collate, and/or classify data; and use basic job related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others under a variety of circumstances. In working with others, some problem-solving is required to analyze issues, create plans of action and reach solutions.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include serving, with a minimum of supervision, as a resource consultant to counseling staff, providing information and making appropriate referrals for information as needed under a minimum of supervision.

Working Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions requires the following physical demands: Some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; some stooping, kneeling, crouching and/or crawling; significant reaching with the use of hands and fingers with the use of computer equipment. Generally the job requires 50% sitting, 20% walking and 30% standing. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations, a generally hazard free environment, and in a clean atmosphere.

Experience: Job related experience is desired.

Education: High school diploma or equivalent.

Required Testing: None

Certificates & Licenses: Typing certificate for 40 wpm.

Clearances: All clearances required to provide service in a public school district in the State of California
