JOB SPECIFICATION
ATTENDANCE TECHNICIAN
THE POSITION
Under general supervision, performs and supervises the maintenance of student attendance records and reports; does typing and general clerical work of complex difficulty in a school or district office; and performs related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Positions in this class receive general supervision and are distinguished by the assignment of clerical duties which require a working knowledge of assigned position functions. Incumbents work within a framework of established procedures and are expected to perform a wide variety of typing and more complex clerical duties with only occasional instruction or assistance. They coordinate communications and daily functions of an attendance office; and act as liaison between students, parents, staff and appropriate agencies regarding student attendance. They may provide supervision and direction for other office staff. The duties listed below are typical for positions in the class collectively but no one position will necessarily include all the duties.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
The duties listed are typical, but not exclusive:
• Coordinates and prioritizes the internal activities and operations of an attendance office.
• Participates in the accurate and timely compilation, preparation and distribution of attendance accounting information, data and reports.
• Records student attendance following prescribed District procedures.
• Obtains verification of student absences.
• Prepares and issues admit and tardy slips, hall passes and early dismissal permits to students.
• Trains, assigns and oversees the work of subordinates.
• Performs a variety of clerical work including typing, proofreading, filing, checking and recording information on records.
• Confers and consults with students, parents, staff, judicial agents, social services and other appropriate parties regarding student attendance matters.
• Explains and interprets facts and policies to other employees and the public about attendance.
• Answers the telephone and gives authoritative information regarding the attendance function.
• Reviews documents for accuracy, completion and conformance to established procedures.
• Operates a variety of office machines, including typewriter, copier, calculator and computer terminal.
• Participates in district inservice programs.
QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE
Knowledge of:
• Correct English usage, spelling, grammar, punctuation and math.
• Modern office methods, procedures and equipment.
• Familiarity with district policies, rules and regulations pertaining to an assigned area.
• State and district laws, rules and regulations pertaining to school attendance accounting and record keeping.
Ability to:
• Perform a variety of clerical work involving use of independent judgement and requiring accuracy and speed.
• Operate standard office equipment.
• Make arithmetical calculations.
• Train and direct others and prioritize their work.
• Work efficiently with frequent interruptions and without continuous supervision.
• Compile and maintain accurate and complete records and reports.
• Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
• Maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
TRAINING EXPERIENCE
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade, including course in typing and office practices; three (3) years of experience in general clerical work and/or attendance accounting including us of computer; or any combination of training experience that could likely provide the desired knowledge and abilities.
PERSONAL QUALITIES
Maturity and judgment; clerical aptitude; willingness to learn operation of office equipment and procedures.
SKILLS
• Typing 45 words per minute.
• Use of computer and computer terminal highly desirable.
LICENSES
A valid California Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.
