The Institution:
Sacramento City College is an urban college in a park-like setting located in the heart of the Sacramento metropolitan area. The College is a learning center for approximately 24,000 day and evening students. Founded in 1916, Sacramento City College is a place of tradition and history, with a vitality and diversity that is contemporary. The College consists of a main campus and outreach centers in Davis and West Sacramento. Classes are offered seven days a week, both day and evening. The faculty and staff of Sacramento City College value a humanistic approach to learning, teaching, and working together in a diverse community. The college is a part of the Los Rios Community College District and uses an interest based approach to dispute resolution.
Position Summary:
Sacramento City College's Counseling Department serves a very diverse student population and our mission is to ensure that students have access to all academic programs and student support services.
The Counselor will provide counseling services under the supervision of the Dean of Counseling and Student Success to community college students through individual and group interactions; assist students in clarifying or establishing appropriate educational and career goals from beginning to completion; support the personal counseling and crisis intervention efforts of the department and college.
Responsibilities:
Professional Responsibilities:
. Academic counseling: assists the student individually and in groups to assess, plan and implement his or her immediate and long-range goals.
. Career counseling: assists the student in assessing his or her aptitudes, abilities, and interests including advisement on current and future employment trends for career decision making.
. Personal counseling: assists the student with life issues that interfere with academic success; assists the student with coping and problem solving techniques.
. Crisis intervention: provides students either directly or through cooperative arrangements with campus and community services.
. Multi-cultural counseling: maintains an understanding of diverse and multi-cultural backgrounds and the appropriateness of counseling approaches.
. Maintain standards of professional conduct and ethics appropriate to the professional position.

Specific Responsibilities:
. Participate in the planning and implementation of the Student Success and Support Program.
. Assess the needs, interests, abilities, achievements, and aptitudes of students; make recommendations to assist the college community in fulfilling its obligation to students and student learning outcomes.
. Provide services to help students complete their educational and/or career goals: degree or certificate; transfer; vocational; skills building; and/or professional development; and create an electronic education plan.
. Develop and maintain close working relationships with outreach centers, high schools, neighboring colleges and universities and community resource agencies.
. Maintain a cumulative electronic counseling record for each counselee; relay pertinent information to college personnel as needed and respect the confidentiality of such records as required by law.
. May teach classes that include college success skills, Human Career Development (HCD) personal development, career explorations, and career decision-making skills as needed.
. Develop and maintain close working relationship with instructional areas, special programs, and administration regarding student success, retention, and recruitment.
. Assist with curriculum; co-curricular studies and articulation assist with curriculum and articulation; serve on college standing committees; participate in faculty governance, including accreditation and student co-curriculum activities; assume other responsibilities as assigned by the Dean.
. Assignment may include evenings, weekends, and counseling services to outreach centers.
Minimum Qualifications:
1. Have a master's degree from an accredited institution, completed by July 1, 2014, in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling; OR, the equivalent.* OR, hold a California Community College Credential in the discipline area. (NOTE: A bachelor's degree in one of the above listed degrees and a license as a Marriage & Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline, pursuant to title 5, section 53410.1.)
2. Have sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, including those with physical or learning disabilities as it relates to differences in learning styles.
