Educational Technology Specialist

Range 34 

DEFINITION:

Under direct supervision of the Director Information Technology and Services, to facilitate the planning, development, implementation, and improvement of district-wide educational technology and instructional technology initiatives.  Establish an environment which encourages creative and innovative use of educational technology.                             

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES (Responsibilities will include but not limited to):

Assist in the planning and implementation of educational technology services to schools; dissemination and implementation of educational technology strategies; assist in the development and implementation of the district’s long-range plans for instructional use of technology and incorporation of  technology into classrooms; work with schools and district office staff to develop and implement plans for acquisition of hardware and software related to educational technology; install and repair computer hardware and software;  provide input regarding  professional development needs related to educational technology;  plan and develop professional development activities for teachers and support staff including demonstrations, workshops, and orientations regarding educational technology; identify best practices and coordinate integration of technology into the learning process; assist in setting and  implementing standards for technology use for students and instructional staff; act as a liaison between the Educational Services Division and the Information Systems Department and District sites; promote and participate in organizations, events and conferences concerning educational technology; provide technical expertise, information and assistance to the Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services regarding assigned functions; prepare and maintain a variety of narrative and statistical reports, records, and files related to assigned activities; maintain student  and teacher databases/accounts; operate a computer and assigned software programs; operate other office equipment as assigned; serve as a district wide resource for new educational technology, both hardware and software; assists school staff, District personnel or the general public by giving information or assistance or referring them to a source of information; prepare purchase orders, checking and recording information, and creating and updating reports; monitor budget balances; arranges and coordinates meetings and in-services; maintain and issue office supplies; perform arithmetical calculations; sorts and distributes incoming and outgoing mail; perform related duties as assigned. 

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:

Education and/or Experience:  AA in technology or equivalent years of experience in the Information Technology (IT) field.  Additional training, certifications and education in educational technology and technology related to curriculum and instruction.

Knowledge and Skills:  Requires a technical understanding of computers and of the functions and capabilities of computer equipment;  requires the ability to set up and maintain files;  must be fully skilled in data entry, keyboarding, word processing, use of interactive white boards, student response systems, and other educational technology; requires the knowledge and skill to provide professional development to a variety of staff  related to educational hardware and software;  familiarity with principles, methods and practices of management information systems; working knowledge of English grammar and composition, business and/or legal formats, spelling, arithmetic, and record keeping; and sufficient communication skills to project a positive image and convey basic information to customers, students, parents, and staff.

Abilities:  Work with minimal supervision; requires the ability to perform the various aspects of the position including the ability to understand and carryout written and oral instructions; requires the ability to organize and prioritize work in order to meet schedules and timelines; keep accurate records and prepare reports; requires the ability to operate standard office machines and equipment; apply sound judgment in resolving problems and discrepancies in data processing records and preparing input documents required to correct records; work confidentially with discretion; and restate complex issues in non-technical terms.

Physical Abilities:  Requires visual acuity to read words and numbers and operate equipment; requires sufficient arm, hand and finger dexterity in order to operate keyboard and other office equipment (50 wpm); light to medium work including walking, standing, stooping, carrying and lifting of light to medium weight materials (10-50 lbs.); and requires speaking and hearing ability sufficient to hear over phone and carry on routine conversations.
