Garden Teacher
We currently have full time and part time positions available at both the Grimmway Academy
Edible Schoolyard and Buena Vista Edible Schoolyard for a Garden Teacher to work under the
direction of the Garden Manager at the corresponding location. The Garden Teacher participates
in teaching daily garden classes as part of an overall edible education program and works with
the Garden team on the maintenance of a productive and educational organic garden.
Responsibilities include:
? Participating in daily garden classes, guiding students through propagation, planting,
composting, cultivation and maintenance of the garden
? Conducting daily lessons designed to foster sound nutritional practices and a love for eating
fresh, seasonal, organic produce
? Assisting in propagation and greenhouse tasks, soil fertility, composting, crop rotation,
garden planning, pruning, irrigation, pest and disease management and small-scale chicken
husbandry
? Maintaining garden facilities and equipment including tool shed, chicken coop, greenhouse
and all hand tools
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
? Demonstrated ability to communicate with elementary age school students in an educational
setting
? Ability to interact effectively with a variety of constituents including students, parents,
teachers, volunteers and garden visitors
? Strong knowledge of the principles of gardening and cultivation
? Proven ability to work collaboratively
Education and Experience Required:
? Educational background in agriculture, horticulture or related fields, with a B.A. degree
preferred
? Experience working with elementary school aged students a plus
? Related experience in organic gardening/farming
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
? Ability to stand, stoop, reach, and bend. Mobility of arms to reach, dexterity of hands to
grasp and manipulate large and small objects
? Ability to stand for long periods and walk long distances
? Ability to lift, push and/or pull objects (up to approximately 50 pounds)
? Ability to read small print
? Ability to work with and in the proximity of equipment with moving mechanical parts
? Ability to work outdoors in a physically demanding environment
? Ability to smell, taste and feel in order to determine the quality of raw food products
? Ability to work around loud noise
