Job Summary:

Under direction, plans, coordinates and provides library media services relating to the acquisition, circulation, distribution and recovery of materials, audio-visual equipment and other instructional materials.  Processes library/media center materials; Performs a wide variety of responsible technical and clerical work in providing media services to teachers, administrators, students and staff.

 

Essential Job Functions:

  • Assists in the instruction of library science classes, instructing students and staff on the operation of computer programs, data bases, etc. for the purpose of enabling students and staff to utilize fully the media center’s materials, resources and equipment.
  • Composes materials and documents (i.e. book orders, forms, correspondence, requisitions, etc.) for the purpose of communicating information to the necessary departments, vendors, general public, etc.
  • Distributes various materials (i.e. books, media, textbooks, audio visual equipment, overdue notices/billings, etc.) for the purpose of providing reference materials and necessary information to students and staff.
  • Handles collection of funds for lost/damaged books for the purpose of ensuring accountability of resources and supplies.
  • Inventories media center books, materials, audio visual equipment and computers for the purpose of documenting losses and maintaining availability and/or monitoring location of materials and equipment.
  • Maintains records and files (i.e. student textbooks, library files, schedules, book lists, supplies, computers and equipment, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining current information on library materials and ensuring the availability of equipment as required.
  • Oversees work assignments of other staff (i.e. assistant, student assistants, volunteers, etc.) for the purpose of providing training in general library skills and procedures.
  • Processes library materials (i.e. books, circulation data, textbook receipt and distribution, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining library collection, ensuring availability of current and accurate reference information.
  • Researches catalogs and various sources for information (i.e. manuals and vendors) for the purpose of selecting appropriate materials for purchase.
  • Responds to students, staff and parents for the purpose of providing information, direction and technical support as needed.

 

Other Job Functions:

  • Attends various meetings as needed for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions.
  • Monitors media center for the purpose of providing library/media services in the absence of the librarian.

 

Essential Job Requirements - Qualifications:

  • Skills, Knowledge and/or Abilities Required:  Skill to operate standard office equipment including use of basic computer applications, skill in the use of correct spelling, grammar and punctuation, skill in the maintenance of detailed and accurate records.  Knowledge of standard office equipment, library control systems, library technical processes, cataloging and classification of library materials, library audiovisual procedures and terminology.   Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions, communicate effectively with other personnel. 
  • Education and Training Required:  Possession of a Library Technical Assistant Certificate and three (3) years of increasingly responsible experience in a school library, public library or media center; OR, Associate Arts Degree in Library Science or related field and three (3) years of increasingly responsible experience in a school library, public library or media center; OR, four (4) years of increasingly responsible experience in a school library, public library or media center.
  • Physical Requirements: Employees in this classification stand, walk, sit use fingers repetitively, use wrists or hands repetitively in a twisting motion or while applying pressure, use both hands simultaneously, have rapid mental/muscular coordination, lift moderately heavy objects; good speaking and hearing abilities; bending at the waist, kneeling and crouching; reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally; stooping; ascending and descending stairs; sitting for long periods at a desk and in front of a computer; have the ability to occasionally lift up to 45 pounds, frequently lift up to 30 pounds and constantly lift a minimum of 5 pounds; have the capability to push 37 pounds maximum force and pull 37 pounds maximum force.  Persons with certain disabilities may be capable of performing the duties of the classification.  Such determination must be made on an individual basis by the District’s medical examiner, taking into consideration the nature of the disability, prosthetic aid and the duties of this position.
  •  Work Environment:  Employees in this classification work inside with exposure to minor contagious illnesses (colds, flu, etc.) in direct contact with the public and other District staff, without direct guidance from supervisor, with a high volume of work and tight deadlines, continuous changing priorities and interruptions.  May require exposure to extreme weather conditions for moderate periods of time. Other Atmospheric Conditions include Fumes and Odors (Copier supplies); Dust (Dust and paper dust).

  • Licenses, Certifications, Bonding, and/or Testing Required: 
    • Library Technical Assistant Certificate
    • Written examination.
    • Fingerprint/criminal justice clearance.
    • Tuberculosis clearance.
