CLASSIFICATION: Maintenance & Operations
POSITION: Head Custodian I
DEFINITION: Under general supervision, supervises and/or performs work related to the maintenance of cleanliness, safety, and security of the buildings and grounds of an elementary school.
Reports To: Assistant Supervisor, Maintenance & Operations
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES: (NOTE: Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor necessarily be limited to these examples.)
•Is assigned cleaning, grounds and maintenance responsibility for an elementary school or small plant
•May supervise at least one additional custodian doing similar work
•Plans and assigns work schedules of other custodians, and sees that their work is done in accordance with instruction and standards
•Arranges furniture and equipment in rooms and auditorium for special events or meetings
•Reports any needed repair work to Principal
•Requisitions, stores, distributes and maintains an inventory of cleaning and building supplies
•Operates and checks the routine operation of furnaces, or heating, ventilating and refrigerating devices as needed
•Takes annual inventory of equipment and supplies
•Adjusts desks and equipment; sweeps, scrubs, mops, waxes and seals floors and hallways; dusts and polishes; washes windows, Venetian blinds, walls, and woodwork; polishes metal work; stores materials and equipment
•Cleans and disinfects restrooms and drinking fountains
•Manages garbage collection, storage and removal
•Picks up trash on grounds and sweeps walkways
•Makes minor non-technical repair of buildings and equipment
•Inspects work of custodians and maintenance men and assists them in doing their work properly
•Opens school buildings and gates, raises and lowers flag, and may perform grounds keeping duties
•Keeps simple records; submits vandalism and safety inspection reports
•Conducts safety inspections of buildings, grounds and equipment
•Other related duties may be assigned
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience: Work experience which evidences knowledge and ability to perform the tasks included in Examples of Duties above.
Knowledge Of:
•The methods, materials, and equipment used in janitorial work
•Safety standards and practices for this position
•Basic supervisory techniques
Ability To:
•Understand and carry out oral and written directions
•Communicate orally and in writing to supervisor, co-workers and subordinates
•Use common cleaning equipment and supplies
•Develop and maintain schedules for periodic cleaning of all facilities
•Work cooperatively with staff, students and the public
•Use simple mechanical tools and make non-technical repairs
•Work within the safety standards set for this position
•Evaluate needs and prioritize them consistent with the work hours
Physical Characteristics: With or without the use of aids: sufficient vision to read printed material; sufficient strength to lift 75 pounds; sufficient body movement and mobility to climb ladders, kneel, crouch, bend, and reach; and sufficient dexterity to manipulate hand tools.
Licenses and Certificates: Possession of a valid California Class III driver’s license
Other Characteristics: Willingness to occasionally respond to emergency calls in the evenings, or on weekends; willingness to furnish own hand tools for use on the job; willingness to assist district trades and school staff members.
