Bard High School Early College (BHSEC) Newark, a partnership between Bard College and the Newark Public Schools (NPS) in Newark, NJ, invites applications for the position of Vice-Principal of Student Services/Dean of Students, beginning August 2014. BHSEC, a national model of public school reform, enables talented and highly motivated students to complete a high school diploma and an Associate of Arts degree from Bard College within four years of study. The academic program emphasizes small classes and a commitment to teaching a diverse student body. The dual NPS/Bard College nature of the program is reflected in the dual title of this position.
Duties include: Leading all aspects of school climate and culture, including both recognition of student achievement and supervision of student discipline; directly supervising the Student Support Team (SST) of social workers, child study team (CST) members, the admissions officer, and the school nurse; observing, evaluating, and coaching teachers, in collaboration with other administrators; leading the daily Advisory program, including curriculum development for that program; tracking student attendance; managing enrollment of students into and out of the school; communicating with parents and families; teaching one class per semester in area of expertise (math or science a plus, but not required).
Experience with both high school and college teaching desirable; teaching experience at one of those levels is required. Ph.D. desirable; M.A. or M.Ed. required. This position requires a New Jersey Principal Standard Certificate or Certificate of Eligibility, or the ability to meet the New Jersey licensing requirements for one of those by August 2014. Work authorization in the United States is required for all BHSEC Newark faculty positions.
