JOB DESCRIPTION Palm Springs Unified School District A.R. # 4232.500 WORKABILITY TRANSITION SPECIALIST PURPOSE STATEMENT The Workability Transition Specialist works under general supervision to perform a wide variety of specialized work to support secondary special education students in learning pre-employment skills, seeking out employment opportunities in the community and developing independent life skills. FUNCTIONS • Promotes the program to the business community, students, participants, teachers, parents, etc. for the purpose of defining the program objectives and opportunities for participation. • Participates in meetings, program special events, training and/or workshops (e.g. community sponsored events, on behalf of students, trains staff, award ceremonies, career events, etc.) for the purpose of receiving and/or conveying information. • Monitors students performance in a variety of work sites according to program guidelines (e.g. visits job sites, obtain employer evaluations, serves as a liaison between employer & student, etc.) for the purpose of identifying areas requiring additional training on techniques and methods for maintaining solid work habits. • Compiles school data (e.g. class schedules, grades, job readiness reports, etc.) for the purpose of complying with District, State and Federal requirements. • Performs clerical support duties and record keeping activities (e.g. scheduling meetings, copying materials, posting information, distributing reports, documenting information, data processing, etc.) for the purpose of addressing program requirements for the State of California Special Education Department. • Collects proper documentation for the purpose of meeting the required items for program participation and/or parent/guardian approval. • Interviews students for the purpose of assessing learning styles and their interests to identify job opportunities. • Administers assessments for the purpose of determining student eligibility in program. • Counsels students in job search skills for the purpose of informing them of employment and career options. • Transports students for the purpose of assisting them in preparing for testing, interviews, and obtaining proper documentation to meet program objectives. • Facilitates inservice/workshop information relating to transition services for the purpose of informing students, parents and/or school personnel. • Refers students to adult services for the purpose of transitioning students to a post-school environment. • Seeks out employment opportunities for students for the purpose of facilitating employment training and placement. • Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities. • Performs related duties as assigned. JOB REQUIREMENTS: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Any combination of experience and training which would indicate possession of the knowledge, skills and abilities listed above. An example of an acceptable combination is: One year experience working with high school special needs population. SKILLS to apply assessment instruments; answer telephones and greet the public courteously; provide excellent customer service and promote a positive work environment; operate a variety of office equipment including a computer and applicable software; prioritize numerous tasks and complete them under various time constraints; perform clerical duties such as filing, word processing, duplicating and maintaining routine records with accuracy. KNOWLEDGE of the operation of office machines including computer equipment and specified software; modern office practices and procedures, alpha and numeric filing systems; basic record-keeping techniques; basic financial record-keeping techniques; correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation. ABILITY to type at a speed of 40 words per minute from clear copy; learn and interpret rules, regulations, and instructions; understand and work within scope of authority; handle multiple projects with deadlines in an accurate manner; maintain confidentiality and use discretion; understand and follow oral and written directions; set priorities; establish and maintain effective working relationships; work as part of a team; understand and be sensitive to the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of vendors, district personnel and administrators; maintain consistent, punctual and regular attendance. WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 60% sitting, 10% walking, and 30% standing. The job is performed under a generally hazard free environment. Education High School diploma or equivalent.
