TRANSPORTATION SUPERVISOR/DRIVER
DEFINITION:
Coordinates the assigning of drivers and equipment to regularly-scheduled runs and to special excursion and field trips; maintains a variety of records and files related to this work.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Conducts the planning and scheduling of student transportation routes and reassigning of drivers and equipment, receives transportation requests for field trips and excursions; schedules and assigns drivers and equipment; assists school personnel in scheduling regular student transportation routes and special transportation needs; maintains records of drivers time, mileage, and equipment use, calls in relief drivers as needed; checks bus routes to insure integrity of schedules; answer parent and student questions regarding District transportation program; maintains a variety of records and files related to the transportation program, conducts training program for drivers; drives bus on relief basis; diagnoses mechanical defects and perform necessary repairs on gasoline and diesel powered buses, trucks, automobiles, tractors, and other automotive equipment, inspects district vehicles and carries out a preventative maintenance program. The transportation supervisor shall respond to all transportation emergencies and provide breakdown and roadside service, or dispatch necessary aid to standard vehicle(s). Work hours shall be flexible and will be adjusted to meet the needs of the school plant by the Superintendent and Chief Business Officer.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
Reports to the Superintendent, or his designee, and responsible for seeing that all regular school bus runs and special trips are staffed by the assigned driver or a relief driver, that assignments are completed properly and on schedule, and that proper records are maintained and District policies and State laws complied with. Assists in selecting and evaluating bus drivers.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of: Good knowledge of the geography of the District, including school and facility locations, major streets, and established routes; California Motor Vehicle Code and Education Code applicable to the transportation of students. Practical knowledge of vehicle service, safety, and maintenance requirements; supervision, training, and leadership principles; maintenance of office records and standard reporting.
Ability to: Conduct training program for bus drivers, scheduled equipment and drivers for the transportation of students, deal and work effectively with other District personnel, students, and the public, maintain records and files; assist in selecting and evaluating drivers; drive a school bus safely, keep abreast of school bus driving and operating laws and requirements; evaluate situations and determine priorities.
EXPERIENCE:
Two years of experience as a Bus Driver. Some training or experience indicating supervisory and office records responsibility is desirable.
EDUCATION: Equivalent to completion of the 12th grade.
LICENSE: A valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's license, Class II.
CERTIFICATION:
A First Aid Certificate issued by the American Red Cross, or pass equivalent test given by the Highway Patrol. A valid Certificate of Completion of the School Bus Driver Instructor Course, issued by the California Highway Patrol.
PHYSICAL ABILITIES:
- Visual capability to read handwritten or typed documents and the display screen of various office machines and equipment.
- Able to conduct verbal communications and conversations.
- Ability to hear normal range of verbal conversations (approx. 60 decibels).
- Able to sit, stand, stoop, kneel, bend and walk.
- Able to sit for sustained periods of time.
- Able to climb slopes, stairs, steps and ladders.
- Able to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Able to carry up to 50 pounds
- Able to operate machines and equipment in a safe and effective manner.
- Demonstrate manual dexterity necessary to operate calculator, typewriter and/or computer keyboard at the required speed and accuracy.
