S10E  - Specialized Physical Health Procedure of Administration of Emergency Anti-Seizure Medication (Diastat ®) 

 

Description of Functions and Responsibilities:

To provide specialized physical health care procedures to Special Education and Section 504 eligible students; to maintain records and documents related to the provision of physical health care procedures.

Distinguishing Characteristics:

Specialized physical health care procedures will be performed under the direct or indirect supervision of a credentialed school district nurse, after completion of a training module designed within the parameters of the California School Nurse Organization’s Green Book: Guidelines for Specialized Physical Healthcare Services in School Settings, 2nd Edition, 2011.  Physical health care procedures can only be executed after demonstrating competency performing the procedures.  A skill-based demonstration of competency will be required yearly. 

Minimum Qualifications:

-One of the following:  An Associate’s Degree or higher, 48 college units, or successful completion of CBEST.

- Successful completion of Community First Aid and Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training every two years (funded through district).

-Respond to electronic request to administer emergency anti-seizure medication.

-Successful annual completion of one training module of the following physical health care procedure:

  • Emergency anti-seizure medication administration

 

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:

In addition to the knowledge, abilities, and skills of the S10 All Impairments, the S10E Specialized Physical Health Care Procedures will be:

-Able to take direction from a certified school district nurse.

-Able to demonstrate competency to perform the above procedure (Diastat)

-Able to accurately record and document Diastat procedure performed on the student

-Able to understand the needs SPED and 504 students who are eligible for services

-Able to maintain and monitor designated equipment and supplies needed administration of Diastat.

-Able to respond to emergency situations in accordance with First Aid/CPR training and individual students’ emergency care plans.

 

 

 

Indemnification

Each S10E will be provided defense and indemnification by SFUSD for any and all civil/criminal liability that could arise in connection with the specialized health care procedure performed by the S10E. 

 

Requirements:

-Written agreement to volunteer for administration of emergency anti-seizure medication.

-Successful completion of emergency anti-seizure medication training module.

-Monthly review  by School District Nurse of required specialized health care procedure being performed with relation to meeting the needs of the student.

 

 

 

Requirements / Qualifications

Either an AA Degree or higher,48 college units or successful completion of CBEST. A high school diploma or its equivalent will be required with proof of 48 units or CBEST.Proof of verification will be requested upon hire.
