BASIC FUNCTION:
Under direction of the Director of Maintenance, Operations and Transportation, perform lead duties in support of the District's transportation function; operate a school bus over designated routes in accordance with time schedules, picking up and discharging students; provide safe and efficient transportation for District students to and from school, special events and field trips; perform daily inspections and maintenance of vehicle; assist in the loading and unloading of students with physical and mental disabilities as necessary.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
This is a single-position class in which the incumbent serves in a lead capacity to Bus Drivers in addition to operating a school bus. The Lead Bus Driver develops and assigns work schedules, prepares transportation records and reports, performs inspections of District vehicles, and ensures Bus Drivers maintain required licensure and certifications.
| POSITION DETAILS: |
| Perform lead duties including training and orienting new Bus Drivers, assigning and reviewing work, planning and scheduling trips, preparing records and reports, conducting inspections of buses, conducting check-rides to ensure Bus Drivers comply with regulations, laws and policies, and scheduling meetings with school and District staff and parents. Receive and schedule requests for transportation for students to and from regular, special and athletic events; establish and adjust school bus routes as needed. Ensure Bus Drivers maintain a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record as well as required first aid and cardiopulmonary (CPR) certificates, and medical cards; distribute forms for random drug testing as required by State law and District policies. Prepare and maintain District and State transportation files, records and reports concerning driver examinations insurance, accidents, vehicle maintenance, costs, mileage, fuel consumption, number of children transported and other related information; prepare student conduct, incident and accident reports. Drive a school bus over designated routes in accordance with specified time schedules and in accordance with regulations and laws related to pupil transportation in California following specified schedules; transport students to and from school, special events and field trips. Pick up and discharge students at established bus stops; stop traffic and escort students across streets and roadways as needed to ensure student safety; report incidents which affect the safety of students. Transport students with physical and mental disabilities to and from designated locations; lift and secure wheel chairs; assist in loading and unloading students with disabilities as necessary. Maintain bus in a safe operating condition through prescribed daily vehicle inspections and drive maintenance including cleaning windows, mirrors and bus interior; check and maintain fuel, oil and water levels; check brakes, brake lights and doors; report mechanical defects and malfunctions to appropriate personnel. Fuel and clean exterior and interior of buses including picking up debris, sweeping and mopping floor, wiping upholstery and cleaning headlights. Utilize two-way radio for bus to bus and bus to base communication. Perform first aid according to established guidelines and procedures. Operate office machines including calculator, copier and facsimile machine. Perform related duties as assigned. |
| MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: |
| EXPERIENCE: Any combination equivalent to: three years of experience as a bus driver including some experience in maintaining records. LICENSES AND OTHER CERTIFICATION: A valid and appropriate California School Bus Driver Certificate, Class B driver's license, current first aid and CPR certificates issued by an authorized agency, and valid Medical Examiner card. |
