Founded in 1998, Aspire Public Schools is one of the nation's highest-performing public school systems serving predominately low-income students.  Aspire delivers a K-12 "College for Certain" education to more than 13,500 students in 37 public charter schools in California and Memphis, TN.

GENERAL SUMMARY: 

Counseling intern positions are unpaid learning positions provided to persons working on their PPS credential, MSW or other mental health internship requirements for their degree.  Positions are closely supervised by school site/regional counseling supervisors and are a combination or service and learning.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Possess an beginning, working knowledge of a variety of forms of intervention and prevention models for both individuals and group therapeutic settings (ex: CBT, Play therapy)
2. Collaborate with school site supervisor on learning plan and goals for the internship
3. Create and implement therapeutic interventions for the purposes of fostering better social-emotional skills and health and positive learning environments for all students at Aspire
4. Collaborate with school on universal interventions for students such as peer mediation, conflict mediation, etc.
5. Foster healthy families through community and school programming, including, but not limited to: parent education and community service
6. Consult with school site supervisor on crisis and child abuse reporting
7. Consistently and routinely update case files for students on his/her caseload
8. Continually improve counseling skills by seeking our constructive feedback and professional development opportunities
9. Keep a set schedule consistent with Counseling Intern’s university calendar and Aspire school calendar
10. Exhibit positive rapport with students
11. Create positive and consistent communication with Aspire supervisor about counseling goals and processes
12. Attend staff meetings as possible based on university requirements
13. Attend IEP and inter-departmental meetings for students receiving counseling services
14. Other duties as assigned

ORGANIZATION RELATIONSHIPS: 

Reports to school site counseling supervisor.  Collaborates with school site teachers, and other staff, as well as Home Office student support staff and other counseling interns within Aspire Public Schools.

1) Required knowledge, skills & abilities:
-Demonstrated commitment to students and learning
-Experience with students grades K-12
-Excellent communication, presentation and interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to write clearly and persuasively and interact effectively with different audiences
-Excellent organization, time management and follow-up skills; high sense of urgency; demonstrated ability to successfully handle multiple cases concurrently
-Ability to work as a part of a team
-Demonstrates ability to adjust to and use new approaches in the performance of his/her duties
-Deals with obstacles and constraints positively

Additionally, the ability to perform the following duties is highly desirable:
-Provide Bilingual counseling services

2) Minimum educational level:
-Enrollment in a program leading to a masters in counseling, social work or related discipline
-Enrollment in a program leading to a PPS Credential
