S10F - Specialized Physical Health Care Procedures
Description of Functions and Responsibilities:
To provide specialized physical health care procedures to Students who are eligible for Special Education and Section 504 services; to maintain records and documents related to the provision of physical health care procedures.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
Specialized physical health care procedures will be performed under the direct or indirect supervision of a credentialed school district nurse, after completion of a training module designed within the parameters of the California School Nurse Organization’s Green Book: Guidelines for Specialized Physical Healthcare Services in School Settings, 2nd Edition, 2011. Physical health care procedures can only be executed after demonstrating competency performing the procedures. A skill-based demonstration of competency will be required yearly.
Minimum Qualifications:
-One of the following: An Associate’s Degree or higher, 48 college units, or successful completion of CBEST.
- Successful completion of Community First Aid and Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training every two years (funded through district).
-Successful annual completion of one or more training modules of the following physical health care procedures:
- Gastrostomy tube feeding without medication
- Blood glucose testing using student’s glucometer
- Administration of asthma medication via nebulizer and/or spacer
- Completion of at least one training module for physical health care needs such as routine mouth suctioning, catheterization, routine oxygen, G-tube pump.
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:
In addition to the knowledge, abilities, and skills of the S10 All Impairments, the S10F Specialized Physical Health Care Procedures will be:
-Able to take direction from licensed registered nurse
-Able to demonstrate competency in performing at least one of the above procedures
-Able to accurately record and document physical health care procedures performed on a daily basis
-Able to understand the needs of Special Education and Section 504 students with medical conditions and effectively respond to their needs
-Able to maintain and monitor designated equipment and supplies needed for physical health care procedures in a sanitary and effective manner. Examples of supplies would be: gastrostomy tubes, feeding syringes, G-tube formula, glucometers, glucose monitoring strips, nebulizers, spacers, (Maintenance of all equipment will be included in training modules)
-Able to respond to emergency situations in accordance with First Aid/CPR training and individual students’ emergency care plans.
Indemnification
Each S10F will be provided defense and indemnification by SFUSD for any and all civil/criminal liability that could arise in connection with any specialized health care procedures performed by the S10F.
Requirements:
-Submission of S10F application
-Interview with School site administrator
-Successful completion of one or more module training(s)
-Monthly review by School District Nurse of required specialized health care procedures being performed with relation to meeting the needs of the student.
Examples of Duties:
In addition to the Examples of Duties for the S10 All Impairments, the S10F Specialized Health Care Procedures paraprofessional may assist students in all areas identified under “Knowledge, Ability and Skills.”

Step 1: $18.33
