Position Summary:
Provide counseling services under the supervision of the Dean of Counseling and Student Services.
Typical Duties:
- Provide individual and group counseling to assist students in making decisions regarding AA/AS, transfer, and occupational/career goals.
- Participate in the planning and implementation of the Student Success, matriculation, counseling, and advising program as directed.
- Study the needs, interests, abilities, achievements, and aptitudes of students; make recommendations to assist the college in fulfilling its obligation to students.
- Develop and maintain collaborative working relationships with instructional areas, outreach centers, feeder high schools, neighboring colleges, and community resource agencies; foster effective high school/college relations.
- Prepare and maintain counseling records using current technology, relay pertinent information to college personnel as needed, and respect the confidentiality of such records as required by law.
- Assist students in exploring careers using current technology, in developing an understanding of the employment environment, and in making and implementing career decisions.
- Teach classes in human/career development.
- Administer assessments and inventories to groups or individuals and interpret the results to counselees.
- Provide counseling for issues impacting retention persistence and academic success, and refer students to resources as appropriate and necessary.
- Assume other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Dean.
- Teaching assignment may include day, evening, on-line, hybrid, weekend, and/or off campus classes.
Responsibilities:
General Responsibilities:
The faculty member shall be responsible for the following: teaching assigned classes under the supervision of the area dean; helping students fulfill their maximum potential in mastering course content; assessing student learning outcomes; maintaining a thorough and up-to-date knowledge in his/her regular teaching field; maintaining standards of professional conduct and ethics appropriate to the professional position; assisting with articulation and curriculum development and review; serving on college committees and participating in faculty governance including accreditation and student co-curricular activities; assuming other responsibilities as assigned by the area dean; fulfilling other duties and responsibilities of a full-time faculty as outlined in the college faculty handbook.
Additioinal Responsibilities:
The department maintains a focus on:
a) counseling of academically and/or economically disadvantaged students
b) crisis intervention and counseling
c) career exploration and decision making
d) outreach activities
e) international students
f) trends and challenges facing community college students
g) counseling designed to support student retention
Minimum Qualifications:
1. Have a master's degree from an accredited institution, completed by July 1, 2014, in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling; OR, the equivalent.* OR, hold a California Community College Credential in the discipline area. (NOTE: A bachelor's degree in one of the above listed degrees and a license as a Marriage & Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline, pursuant to title 5, section 53410.1.)
2. Have sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, including those with physical or learning disabilities as it relates to differences in learning styles.
*Note: Applicants applying under the "equivalent provision" must provide details and explain how their academic preparation is the equivalent of the degrees listed above.

**Note: Individuals who have completed college or university course work at an institution in a country other than the United States must obtain a complete evaluation of foreign transcripts, degrees and other relevant documents. A foreign transcript evaluation is required any time foreign course work is used to meet minimum qualifications and/or salary placement even if the foreign transcript has been accepted by a college or university in the United States.

Conditions:
All Positions: Offers of employment are contingent upon the successful clearance from a criminal background check, freedom from tuberculosis, and proof of identity and eligibility to work in the United States prior to the first day of work. The District may select additional qualified candidates should unexpected vacancies or needs occur during this recruitment/selection process. When education is a requirement for the position, official academic transcripts from the accredited college/university must be submitted within 60 days of hire.
Administrative/Executive/Faculty Positions: Contingent on funding and eligibility, successful candidates selected for an interview may be eligible to apply for partial reimbursement of travel expenses.
Administrative/Executive Positions: Administrative positions may be subject to the District's Conflict of Interest Code, and a statement of economic interest is required within thirty (30) days following appointment to the position. Management/Executive positions are exempt from overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
Additional Salary Information:
Entering annual salary within a given range varies, depending upon units and degrees completed at accredited colleges/universities and on verified experience. Additional earnings may be available for summer, overloads, and stipends.
