FULLERTON SCHOOL DISTRICT CLASSIFIED PERSONNEL COMMISSION RANGE 30 TECHNICAL SUPPORT SPECIALIST III JOB SUMMARY Under general supervision, using moderate journey level-skills provides training and support to District employees in their use of information systems software and hardware. Monitors and maintains District information systems and networks to insure efficient operation. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS The classification of Technical Support Specialist III differs from that of Technical Support Specialist II in that the duties are more varied and complex and require a higher degree of initiative, independence and technical skill. The Technical Support Specialist III position will have more responsibilities for operating and maintaining the District’s data systems, including the student information system, and in supporting the operation of the District’s business information systems. This position may also direct the work of the Technical Support Specialist I or II. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES Install information system software updates; maintain records to support software version control throughout the District; train school and District personnel in the use of information system software and required State reporting; provide telephone technical support to District personnel in the use of computer applications; prepare information for publication on the District's World Wide Web server; design and print or electronically submit reports using the District's information systems; create report templates for other District personnel to use in reporting from District database systems; monitor and repair, as needed, the District’s data networks; troubleshoot and repair network outages; utilize the assistance of vendor technical support resources when needed; perform analysis of microcomputer-based application development, modification and hardware/software problems; evaluate user needs and make recommendations of proper hardware and software requirements; independently perform microcomputer software installation and programming; perform other related duties as needed. EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS Education: Individuals possessing knowledge skills and abilities are considered to possess the education necessary to succeed in this class. Completion of coursework highly desirable. Experience: Three years of increasingly responsible experience with microcomputer hardware/software involving the use of a wide variety of microcomputer software; diagnosing/troubleshooting user software problems; providing user training and performing routine system maintenance; successful experience with Macintosh and Windows computers; successful experience with student information systems highly desirable. Knowledge of: Macintosh Operating System, productivity software applications including word processing, spreadsheets, and database management programs; personal computer software applications; local area networking and microcomputer communications; records storage and handling techniques. Ability to: Troubleshoot and resolve, in person and by telephone, problems experienced by computer system users; maintain accurate records of software licenses, versions and installations; work without close supervision; operate personal computers; monitor District data networks and help troubleshoot and resolve network malfunctions; perform router configurations and upgrades; maintain harmonious working relations with school officials and other employees, students and the public; follow oral and written directions; interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form; maintain insurability to drive a personal vehicle on the job; ability to read and write English at a level required for satisfactory work performance; read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations; write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. License: Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License Physical Standards/Technology & Media Services Series The work environment and physical demands of the positions as described below are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of a position in this computer technician/specialist category. Work Environment: While performing the duties of this position employees are subject to constant interruption. The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints. These positions may also be high volume positions and may work without direct and/or constant supervision. Although the employee in these positions works mainly indoors they may be required to work outdoors with exposure to seasonal weather conditions. Employees provided with individual work vehicles must be able to drive a vehicle to conduct work. Noise level in the work environment is usually quiet and occasionally will be moderate. Physical Demands: The physical demands of this position include sitting for extended periods of time, frequent standing and the use of hands and fingers to handle and to operate keyboards and specialized diagnostic repair tools and equipment. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arm and must squat, stoop or kneel, bend at the waist and reach above the shoulders, head and horizontally. The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk more than the average person while performing the duties of this job. Lifting, pushing or pulling of objects generally not exceeding fifty pounds may also be required. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus to complete assigned work orders, read a variety of materials and inspect District equipment. The employee must be able to hear and speak to receive and exchange information.
