Working Hours
One full-time, tenure-track Veterans Counselor position beginning in July 2014, reporting to the Dean of Counseling and Student Development. Annual on-duty days will be 195 days spread over 12 months. Salary placement will be on the academic salary schedule, plus a 1.108 time factor (reflecting the number of days beyond the standard 176-day faculty contract).
The standard work week for counselors is forty (40) hours, including twenty-five (25) hours of direct student contact, ten (10) hours used for professional preparation, and five (5) hours of departmental activities and collegial governance. The twenty-five (25) hours of student contact is defined as any counseling activity in which counseling service is provided to a student or students, including instruction, workshops, individual or group counseling. The ten (10) hours of professional preparation include course work preparation and counseling preparation (of which 5 hours must be on campus). The expectation is that thirty (30) hours will be on campus. Counselors assigned to teach classes are designated as classroom faculty for that portion of their workload, which is computed accordingly as classroom Lecture Hour Equivalents (LHE).

Representative Duties
Duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
1. Provide academic, career, and personal counseling (face to face and/or online) helping students primarily in the Veterans population make effective decisions in pursuit of their academic, career, and personal goals. (E)
2. Keep abreast of changing degree, certificate, transfer and Veterans information in order to advise students about the most current requirements and train other counselors. (E)
3. Participate in the district's and academic senate's participatory governance processes and committees. (E)
4. Lead group presentations including student-interest workshops and seminars, orientations, group advising, and other matriculation functions.
5. If assigned, teach credit classes in college success and career/life planning.
6. Coordinate student success initiatives in the Veterans program.
7. Serve as liaison for Veterans related issues to academic and career technical education departments, student services, and instructional faculty.
8. Participate in program review and development and assessment of service area outcomes. (E)
9. Participate in ongoing professional development activities related to Veterans Services and in the field of counseling.
10. Serve as a resource to the disciplinary officer for all 3 campuses on issues related to Veterans populations.
11. Serve on the Campus Assessment, Response and Evaluation (CARE) Advisory Team.
12. Engage in other activities (such as community outreach) as requested by the Dean.

Type of Benefits
Upon initial employment, full-time faculty members are placed on the salary schedule based on education and years of experience. The maximum initial placement for experience is Step 10. Faculty members are encouraged to continue their professional development through additional study, qualifying them for advancement on the salary schedule.

To be eligible for this position, you must meet and provide evidence of the following minimum qualifications:
a Master's degree in counseling; career development; clinical psychology; counseling psychology; educational counseling; guidance counseling; marriage and family therapy; marriage, family and child counseling; rehabilitation counseling; or social work;
OR a Master's degree in career counseling; career development and college counseling; career development and community counseling; college counseling and student services; counseling & human development; counseling and guidance; counseling and personnel services; counseling studies; counseling w/specialization in college counseling; counseling: student development in higher education; counselor education; education in counseling; education w/concentration in counseling and guidance; education w/emphasis in student affairs/higher education counseling; education with a concentration/emphasis in counseling; education/counseling & student personnel; education: counseling in higher ed; educational psychology -- sub-plan: school counseling; educational studies w/concentration in school counseling; guidance & counseling; marital and family therapy; professional counseling; psychology -- clinical counseling concentration; psychology w/specialization in marriage and family therapy (from Chapman University); school counseling; or school psychology (these are approved comparable degree titles at MiraCosta College);
OR a Bachelor's degree in one of the above listed degree areas AND a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) license valid in California;
OR a valid California Community College Counselor credential;

AND sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
All degrees and units used to satisfy the minimum qualifications must be from postsecondary institutions accredited by an accreditation agency recognized by either the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Postsecondary Accreditation.

Desirable Qualifications
1. At least two years of counseling experience (either full time or the equivalent to full time) at a higher education institution, within the last six years.
2. Significant previous college counseling experience working with Veterans populations.
3. Demonstrated ability to teach counseling courses and facilitate workshops, orientations, and seminars.
4. Familiarity with policies specific to Veterans populations including Veterans benefits, educational planning, and military transcripts.
5. Sensitivity to issues (career, personal, social) faced by Veterans and active duty military as well as first-generation, underrepresented, and non-traditional college students.
6. Knowledge of and interest in implementing technology-enhanced services.
7. Willingness to participate in special programs (Basic Skills, Puente Program, Umoja, Summer Bridge, athletic counseling, etc.).
8. Bilingual (English and Spanish).
