Summary Description
The counselor shall perform all regularly assigned counseling duties that include academic, career, and personal counseling for students enrolled in STEM disciplines (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). This assignment also includes components of the matriculation and transfer processes. Specific responsibilities include evaluating student transcripts, discussing probation/dismissal procedures, and assisting students with career assessment and counseling, educational planning, transfer requirements and appropriate course selection for STEM fields.
Evening and some weekend work will be required as part of this position. Counselors work in an environment that requires the highest level of integrity, ethical practices, innovation, collegiality, teamwork, and adaptability to San Bernardino Valley College’s campus culture in support of student success.
The counselor will assume a leadership role in the development and maintenance of the HSI-STEM and Articulation PASS GO project website in coordination with the project partner at California State University, San Bernardino’s Foundation.
Examples of Duties
The duties include but are not limited to Early Alert, System, Assessment Practices/Research, Student follow-up and other related areas.
Other responsibilities of this position may include, but are not limited to, working with San Bernardino Valley College and California State University, San Bernardino’s HSI-STEM and Articulation PASS GO project team, as well as with the external evaluation team. At SBVC, this may involve regular meetings with project staff, teaching student development courses; performing outreach services to high schools and the community; serving as a liaison to instructional divisions; assisting with the development of counseling related publications; presenting workshops for special student populations, appropriately assisting in the development and implementation of special programs focusing on access and retention; participating in curriculum development for student development courses; maintaining files and writing reports on project activities; and conducting student orientations. In addition, the counselor will assume a leadership role in the development and maintenance of the PASS Go project website including coordination with the project partner at CSUSB’s Foundation.
Minimum Requirements
Master’s degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, or career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling, OR the equivalent.(NOTE: A bachelor’s degree in one of the above listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.)
Experience that indicates a sensitivity to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, including those with physical and learning disabilities.
Desired Qualifications
College teaching experience in career and student development courses;
One year of full time, or two years of part time paid community college counseling experience with emphasis in educational planning;
Experience in creating career and student development courses and course syllabi;
Demonstrated proficiency in the use of career counseling computer inventories such as Strong Interest Inventory, COPS, etc.
High degree of computer literacy and the ability to integrate computer technology, one-on-one and group counseling, orientations, and online counseling.
Understanding of and experience in counseling those interested in STEM-related fields. Experience in and/or knowledge of internship and job placement.
Ability to administer and interpret aptitude, personality and career interest assessment instruments. Experience in the transfer process particularly in the use of CSU Mentor, UC Pathways, and ASSIST.
Demonstrated experience in effectively working with students who are undecided/undeclared about majors and careers.
Bilingual Spanish/English ability.
Working Hours
Working hours may vary depending upon the needs of the college. Evening and Weekend work may be required.
Salary and Benefits
Lecture classes $55.48 per hour
Lab classes $46.85 per hour
Non-Instructional assignments $43.16 per hour
