The Institution:

THE DISTRICT

 

Located in California's capital, the Los Rios Community College District serves a growing population of 1.8 million within a 2,400 square mile service area. With more than 80,000 students enrolled in credit programs, Los Rios is the second-largest community college district in the state and the fourth largest in the nation. It is governed by a seven-member Board of Trustees.

 

The district includes four colleges: American River, Cosumnes River, Folsom Lake and Sacramento City. It is recognized as a leader in developing partnerships with business, industry and government. The district operates a Small Business Development Center, a Center for International Trade Development and The Training Source, a division that provides employee training for private business and government agencies.

 

THE COLLEGE 

 

American River College is the largest of the four colleges in the Los Rios Community College District and is one of the largest in California. Founded in 1955, the lovely main campus is located on 153 oak-studded acres in suburban Sacramento. More than 30,000 students are enrolled in comprehensive academic and vocational programs or in courses leading to occupational certificates. Approximately 755 permanent faculty and staff are employed by the college. It prides itself on its collegial atmosphere, positive culture and excellent employee relations within a shared-governance structure. The college mission statement emphasizes its commitment to students' learning and success. To that end, the college has developed an array of partnerships with community agencies, business and industry. The college has an outstanding record of academic excellence and is among the top community colleges in transferring students to the state's university systems. Its occupational programs emphasize emerging technologies and enjoy high placement rates. The college has been recognized repeatedly for its leadership in community college education and has established itself as a leader in planning and programs for student success.

 

THE COMMUNITY

 

Sacramento is the capital of the most populous state in the union and the hub of California's political and economic life. The area enjoys a year-round temperate climate, and its central geographic location gives easy access to San Francisco, the Pacific Ocean, the Sierra Nevada, Lake Tahoe and the Mother Lode country. 

 

The area also offers many cultural and social opportunities. Sacramento has outstanding theaters, art galleries, professional sports, outdoor recreation and a restored Old Sacramento, home of the annual Sacramento Music Festival.

 

Advanced educational opportunities are readily available at local universities such as: the University of California, Davis; California State University, Sacramento; Drexel University and McGeorge School of Law. 

 

Sacramento is a leading growth area with expanding industries in biotechnology, clean/green technologies and health care. It offers many attractive residential areas and regional parks.

 

 

Position Summary:

The President serves as the educational leader and the chief administrative officer of the college and reports to the Chancellor of the District. Reporting directly to the President are: the Vice Presidents of Instruction and Student Learning, Student Services and Enrollment Management, and Administrative Services; the Dean of College Planning and Research; Director of College Advancement; and the Public Information Officer.

- Demonstrates successful administrative experience in resource development, fiscal planning and management and strategic and long-range planning. 

 

- Understands the dynamics within the multicultural community the college serves. 

 

- Demonstrates understanding of, and support for, the interrelationship of instructional programs and student services. 

 

- Is committed to the concept of shared governance and is known for integrity and honesty in personal and professional interactions. 

 

- Understands and supports academic freedom in a college 

learning environment. 

 

- Understands and supports Interest-Based approaches to problem and conflict resolution. 

 

- Is entrepreneurial and is experienced and supportive of fundraising from private and public external sources. 

 

- Actively develops relationships with community partners. 

 

- Strongly supports a comprehensive staff development program and has respect for the professional abilities of all staff and enhances staff morale. 

 

- Demonstrates expertise in enrollment management. 

 

- Takes a personal interest in students' academic success, involvement in governance and extracurricular activities. 

 

- Encourages and maintains open lines of communication with students and all levels of staff; encourages free exchange of ideas and is visible and accessible.

Minimum Qualifications:

1. Possession of an earned doctorate* from an accredited institution completed by January 2, 2014; OR, a master's degree plus experience that would justify waiver of the doctorate. 

 

2. Senior administrative experience in higher education. 

 

3. Successful recent leadership experience in educational planning, fiscal management, personnel relations and community relations. 

 

4. Teaching or student services experience in higher education is desired.

 

5. Have sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, including those with physical or learning disabilities as it relates to differences in learning styles.

Conditions:

All Positions: Offers of employment are contingent upon the successful clearance from a criminal background check, freedom from tuberculosis, proof of identity and eligibility to work in the United States prior to the first day of work.
