Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District BILINGUAL/ENGLISH LANGUAGE JOB DESCRIPTION LEARNER PARAPROFESSIONAL PRIMARY FUNCTION: Under general supervision, to serve as an assistant and resource to teachers in the supervision, teaching, observation, and training of students, including those students with a wide variety of physical limitations or special needs who may require specialized health care; to assist and engage in the preparation and assembling of teaching materials; and to do related work as required. DIRECTLY RESPONSIBLE TO: Supervising teacher, site administrator, appropriate manager, Coordinator or Director. RELATIONSHIP TO STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT: Paraprofessionals are trained support staff who work in the classroom with the teacher in his/her role to increase learning potential and provide greater opportunities for student growth and achievement. The Paraprofessional is to support and enrich the classroom environment with the goal of increased student learning. ASSIGNED RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Supports classroom teachers in the delivery of instructional program to English Language Learners; communicates with student in student’s primary language as required. 2. Assists and works independently in maintaining order among students in the classroom and on school grounds. 3. Assists and engages in the preparation of teaching materials; assists with cumulative and other record keeping. 4. Assists with student records as directed by a teacher and/or administrator. 5. Attends to English Language Learners physical and emotional needs in the classroom; under direction of professional staff, provides guidance and referral to appropriate agencies. 6. Assists in maintaining inventory of books and teaching aids. 7. Confers as needed with teachers concerning programs and material to meet the needs of English Language Learners; may participate in student related conferences, school-parent meetings, telephone communications, and home visits. 8. Supervises groups of students in the library/media center or in other special activities. 9. Assists with various classroom projects. 10. May travel from site to site and/or room to room to provide services for English Learners. 11. Under appropriate supervision, conducts the activities of the classroom. BILINGUAL/ENGLISH LANGUAGE JOB DESCRIPTION (continued) LEARNER PARAPROFESSIONAL 12. Attends to other English Learners school needs such as: arranging transportation, making conference appointments, assisting with completing forms and applications. 13. Translates written materials relating to the educational program of English Learners being assisted. 14. May apply initial first aid in the event of initial injury or illness. PARAPROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Associate of Arts Degree, or 2. 60 semester hours or equivalent of college training or district approved staff development with a cumulative grade point average of no less than 2.00 for graded classes, or 3. Meet the qualifications as delineated by the California Department of Education for “No Child Left Behind” Legislation. OTHER QUALIFICATIONS FOR ALL BILINGUAL INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANTS: 1. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions, read, write, and speak at a level sufficient to fulfill the duties to be performed for the position described. 2. Previous experience in the specialized care and supervision of children required by the particular position. 3. Knowledge of English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary; student recreational activities. 4. Ability to assist with supervising the learning activities in a school district setting. 5. Ability to work independently and operate a computer workstation. 6. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, teachers and co-workers. 7. Ability to pass Spanish Language and English Language Instructional Assistant proficiency tests. 8. Proficient in target second language as needed. 9. Ability to relate to people of a different cultural background. Applicants must meet para-educator qualifications: A minimum of an AA degree or higher, or completion of a minimum of 48 semester units, or certification of completion of ROP Para-educator Course (CODESP test). Must also take and pass the District Spanish Proficiency Exam (District will contact you to schedule at the appropriate time).
