JOB DESCRIPTION Palm Springs Unified School District A.R. # 4219.355 PARAPROFESSIONAL – IN-SCHOOL SUPERVISED STUDY (ISSS) PURPOSE STATEMENT The Paraprofessional In-School Supervised Study oversees students assigned to “In School Suspension”; documents students' behavioral; and provides information to teachers, parents and/or other personnel. FUNCTIONS • Performs record keeping and clerical functions (e.g. attendance logs, activity reports, etc.). • Responds to inquiries (e.g. students, teachers, administrators, and/or parents). • Provides verbal feedback of observations. • Implements behavior plans when defined by the referring teacher, administrator and/or counselor. • Monitors students during assigned periods. • Assists other personnel, as may be required. • Performs related duties as assigned. JOB REQUIREMENTS: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Any combination of experience and training which would indicate possession of the knowledge, skills and abilities listed above. An example of an acceptable combination is: Graduation from high school with additional course work in behavioral sciences and one year experience working with middle/high school students with demonstrated behavioral adjustment problems. SKILLS to implement written and oral instructions provided by the teacher; tutor individual and/or small groups of students; learn teacher developed behavioral strategies; score teacher generated spelling, reading, and math exams accurately; perform routine clerical work and basic arithmetical calculations; file student information; perform basic algebra and geometry; use basic numerical concepts such as whole numbers, fractions percentages, and other techniques for solving practical problems; use tables, graphs, diagrams, and charts; operate standard office equipment; prepare and maintain accurate records. KNOWLEDGE of behavior and crisis management techniques; concepts of grammar and punctuation; stages of child development and learning styles; and age appropriate activities; classroom procedures and appropriate student conduct; safe practices in classroom and playground activities; health standards and hazards; and safety practices and procedures. ABILITY to communicate with diverse groups; maintain confidentiality and use discretion; exhibit patience and compassion; work with frequent interruptions; learn, explain and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies, and procedures; maintain a clean, safe and orderly environment; understand and follow oral and written directions; handle emergencies in a calm and effective manner; adapt to changing work locations; set priorities; establish and maintain effective working relationships; work as part of a team; understand and be sensitive to the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of vendors, district personnel and administrators; maintain consistent, punctual and regular attendance. WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Medical, Dental and Vision benefits are provided at no cost if employed at least 7 hours a day, and on a pro-rated basis from 4 to fewer than 7 hours per day. Associate membership in Teamsters Bargaining Association or payment of an equal service fee is a condition of employment. There are fifteen paid holidays per year for 12 month employees. Vacation for full-time employees is earned at the rate of 13 days per year. Less than 12-month employees, vacation is prorated to the work year. One day of sick leave is earned for each month worked, and can be accumulated indefinitely.
