AIR CONDITIONING MECHANIC
PURPOSE STATEMENT
The Air Conditioning Mechanic installs, repairs, and maintains heating and air conditioning systems; identifies repair and/or replacement needs; assists other skilled trades; provides necessary information on the proper uses of the equipment; and ensures adequate materials are available to complete assignments in a timely manner.
FUNCTIONS
• Coordinates with administration, supervisor and other trades.
• Diagnoses problems and failures in heating/air conditioning systems and identifies equipment and systems repair and replacement needs.
• Maintains tools and equipment.
• Prepares documentation (e.g. time and materials, specifications, warranty issues, etc.).
• Repairs various items, systems and/or components (e.g. valves, fan motors, gaskets, filters, belts, fluids, etc.).
• Procures equipment and supplies and maintains inventory of required items.
• Responds to emergency situations.
• Transports various items (e.g. tools, equipment, supplies, etc.) to various job sites.
• Informs personnel regarding procedures and status of work orders (e.g. computerized control systems, electronic consol, etc.).
• Inspects facilities, systems and their components and identifies necessary repairs for preventive maintenance.
• Installs heating and air conditioning systems and components (e.g. electronic and pneumatic switches, gauges, thermostats, valves, tubing, etc.).
• Maintains files and records (e.g. work orders, etc.).
• Maintains District vehicle (e.g. checking fluid levels, tire pressure, etc.).
• Assists other personnel as may be required.
• Performs related duties as assigned.
JOB REQUIREMENTS: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Any combination of experience and training which would indicate possession of the knowledge, skills and abilities listed above. An example of an acceptable combination is: Two (2) years of experience as a journeyman air conditioner and refrigeration mechanic in both central and room systems.
SKILLS to perform single, technical tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions; compute air and water balance formlas; operate equipment used in the repair and maintenance of air conditioning and heating equipment; plan and manage projects; prepare and maintain accurate records; handle hazardous materials.
KNOWLEDGE of basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; principles, methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the mechanical repair of heating, air conditioning and refrigeration systems or units; steamfitting, plumbing and electrical trades techniques; design, construction, and functions of mechanical, pnuematic, electrical, and electronic cotnol systems; safety practices and procedures; pertinent codes, policies, regulations and/or laws.
ABILITY to diagnose defects, install, repair and maintain heating, ventilating, and air conditioning units; interpret and work from building plans, wiring diagrams, blueprints of mechanical and electrical structures, and manufacturer specifications; perform mathematical calculations used in measurement and in estimates of supplies and materials; adapt to changing work priorities; communicate with diverse groups; meet deadlines and schedules; work as part of a team; drive a motor vehicle to various sites to perform job duties; observe safety precautions and procedures; maintain a work pace appropriate to a given workload; establish and maintain effective and harmonious working relationships with students, fellow employees, teachers, and administrators; understand, be sensitive to and respect the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disabilities and sexual orientation of students, teachers, administrators and staff; maintain consistent, punctual and regular attendance.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; frequent climbing and balancing; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 20% sitting, 45% walking, and 35% standing. The job is performed under some temperature extremes and some hazardous conditions.

EVALUATION
Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between California Teamsters Public, Professional & Medical Employees Union, local 911 Maintenance & Operations Unit, and Palm Springs Unified School District.

Upon offer of employment you will be required to pay for fingerprint processing and a TB clearance. Medical, Dental and Vision benefits are provided at no cost if employed at least 7 hours a day, and on a pro-rated basis from 4 to fewer than 7 hours per day.
Associate membership in Teamsters Bargaining Association or payment of an equal service fee is a condition of employment.
There are fifteen paid holidays per year for 12 month employees. Vacation for full-time employees is earned at the rate of 13 days per year. Less than 12-month employees, vacation is prorated to the work year. One day of sick leave is earned for each month worked, and can be accumulated indefinitely.
