CARPENTER BASIC FUNCTION: Under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor, perform journey-level carpentry work in the construction, maintenance, repair, alteration and installation of wood structures, buildings, articles and equipment. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: Perform journey-level work in the installation, repair, alteration or construction of a variety of carpentry assignments including wooden floors, partitions, porches, roofs, stairways and similar work of wood construction. E Construct, maintain and repair wood shelving, closets, cabinets, cases, trim, stairways and finish carpentry; hang, tape and texture dry wall, bulletin boards, white and blackboards. E Fit wooden doors, windows, sashes, screens and locks. E Maintain and repair bulletin boards, lockers and gym and playground equipment. E Lay, maintain and repair linoleum, asphalt tile, plastic laminate, mastic, wood and floors; install ceiling tiles. E Construct, maintain and repair wooden school furniture and equipment. E Inspect and verify work needed to be performed; plan work from sketches, drawings and blueprints; estimate time and material needed; requisition needed materials. E Assist in termite and dry rot inspection and eradication. Drive to various location. Perform related duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: KNOWLEDGE OF: Materials, tools and procedures used in rough and finished carpentry and cabinet making. Qualities and uses of various woods and other construction materials. Safety precautions and procedures. Applicable building codes. ABILITY TO: Perform skilled rough and finish carpentry and cabinet making work. Use carpentry tools and machines skillfully. Work from sketches, plans and specifications. Plan and lay out carpentry work including estimating labor and material costs. Perform and learn to perform a wide range of general maintenance and repair work not requiring full trade skills. Apply shop math accurately and correctly. Understand and follow oral and written directions. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school supplemented by completion of a recognized apprenticeship program in carpentry and three years journey-level experience in carpentry installation, alteration and repair work. LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Valid California driver's license. WORKING CONDITIONS: ENVIRONMENT: Indoor and outdoor work environment. Noise from equipment operation. Driving a vehicle to conduct work. Regular exposure to fumes, dust and odors. PHYSICAL ABILITIES: Lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling of heavy objects. Hearing and speaking to exchange information. Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate hand and power tools and equipment used in the carpentry trade. Kneeling or crouching. Reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally. Heavy physical labor. HAZARDS: Power saws and flying debris or nails. Working around and with machinery having moving parts.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES: Lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling of heavy objects. Hearing and speaking to exchange information. Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate hand and power tools and equipment used in the carpentry trade. Kneeling or crouching. Reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally. SPECIAL INFORMATION: Offers of employment are contingent upon successful completion of a drug test, TB test, fingerprinting and may include a physical exam.
