Job Description / Essential Elements: Print   

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Performs routine first aid procedures and screens ill or injured children, including those suspected to have head lice, according to established procedures. Refers serious illnesses and injuries to school nurse. Provides specialized health care needs.

Assists students in routine non-instructional activities such as dressing, eating, toileting. E
Provides specialized health care services for students such as wheelchair positioning, lifting, toileting, chest percussion, emergency injections, medications requiring specialized procedures, catheterization, tube feeding, feeding, colostomy care, tracheotomy suctioning, and other procedures which are necessary during the school day to enable a child to attend school. E
Audits student records for proper immunizations and verifications of required tuberculosis skin test (Mantoux); alerts parents of needed immunizations and maintains communication until records of immunizations are provided. Maintains an accurate list of students exempted from the immunization program. E
Maintains an accurate list of students with health needs under direction of the school nurse.
Assists with the preparation and arrangements for health testing programs performed by the school nurse; records student test results.
Communicates with parents regarding health issues as directed by the school nurse. E
Notifies parents of available clinic programs; prepares required first grade audit for state report.
Maintains adequate supplies for first aid kits and health office. E
Administers CPR in emergency situations if necessary; refers other emergencies to nurse or building administrator. E
Performs a variety of routine clerical duties; typing, filing and duplication materials as needed.
Maintains confidentiality as mandated by law. E
Assist with administration of medications according to school district policy. E
Gathers information as required of mandated reports.
Performs above listed duties at assigned schools.
Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Demonstrated Knowledge of:
CPR and first aid techniques
Health and safety regulations
Applicable sections of State Education code and other applicable laws
District organization, operations, policies and objectives
Modern office practices, procedures and equipment, including computer usage
Record-keeping techniques
Correct English usage grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary
Oral and written communications skills
Telephone techniques and etiquette
Bilingual/Spanish a requirement

Ability to:
Administer first aid and specialized health care to ill, injured, and/or physically disabled children
Must be able to perform physical activities associated with the duties of the position
Learn quickly the procedures, functions, and limitations of assigned duties
Establish and maintain files, records, reports and referrals
Work cooperatively and effectively with children and adults
Understand and carry out oral and written directions
Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action
Meet schedules and time lines
Plan and organize work
Maintain records and prepare reports

Experience:
Prior experience working with children is desirable

Education:
High School Diploma or GED required
Completion of formal or informal education sufficient to assure the ability to read, write, and communicate in English at the level required for successful job performance

Licenses and Certificates:
Must maintain current CPR and First Aid certificates.
