Principal Job Description

 

The Principal is the educational leader of Peak to Peak Mountain Charter. The Principal focuses on student achievement and managing tools and resources necessary to implement an instructional program that maximizes learning and enabling Peak to Peak students expanded opportunities for learning and personal growth. The Principal manages all daily operations of the school site to ensure effective operations of Peak to Peak. The Principal provides educational leadership and direction to staff that is consistent with the school’s mission, core purpose, values, and LIFESKILLS, as provided for in the Peak to Peak charter and that is focused on student achievement. The Principal reports directly to the Board of Directors, and s/he will communicate and report to the Board as needed.

 

The Principal shall perform assigned tasks as directed by the Board of Directors and shall be required to undertake some or all of the tasks detailed below. The tasks may include, but are not limited to, the following:

 

  • • Work with the School Board, staff, and the School Advisory Council to develop and maintain a school-wide plan to create an effective school culture. The school culture should encourage mutual respect, cooperation, LIFESKILLS, conflict resolution skill development, value of community service and the democratic process. The school-wide plan will include, but is not limited to, the following:

o A comprehensive set of student discipline procedures;

o Character and self-esteem building program;

o Development of positive discipline methods in each classroom;

o A comprehensive conflict resolution and bully prevention program;

  • • Promote the school’s mission and vision through consistent implementation of the educational program as described in the Peak to Peak charter;
  • • Maintain a school-wide culture of accountability that ensures high academic achievement and growth for every student;
  • • Communicate and report to the Charter School Board of Directors;
  • • Interview and recommend employee hiring, promotion, discipline, and/or dismissal;
  • • Supervise and evaluate teachers and staff. Conduct regular staff development, classroom observations and staff meetings in order to foster a deep focus on student learning and to enable collaboration and team-building among staff;
  • • Ensure compliance with all applicable state and federal laws and help secure local grants;
  • • Oversee school finances to ensure financial stability and maintain up-to-date financial records;
  • • Communicate with parents, recruit new families and students, and assure families of academic growth;
  • • Take responsible steps to secure full and regular attendance at school of the students enrolled in accordance with policies established by the Board of Directors;
  • • Ensure that proper evaluation techniques are used for students;
  • • Manage student discipline and, as necessary, implement the suspension and expulsion process;
  • • Participate in IEP meetings as necessary;
  • • Oversee the ISP program if 10 or less students are enrolled;

Establish and maintain a system to handle organizational tasks such as student records, teacher records, teacher credentialing information, contemporaneous attendance logs, purchasing, budgets, and timelines;

  • • Ensure the security of the school buildings in conjunction with the Safety Committee;
  • • Collaborate with teachers, SAC, and the School Board regarding areas of finance, facility, safety, public relations, volunteering, school schedule, fieldtrips, fundraising, and any additional school concerns, as needed;
  • • Be a liaison between the teachers, parents and School Board regarding policies, procedures, and complaints. The Principal will attempt to resolve complaints in a constructive, positive manner. When necessary, the Principal will refer complaints to the School Board.
  • • Complete and submit required documents as requested or required by the charter and/or

Charter School Board of Directors and/or the District;

  • • Promote and publish the Charter Program in the community and promote positive public relations and interact effectively with media;
  • • Attend District Administrative meetings as requested by the District and stay in direct contact with District regarding changes, progress, et cetera;
  • • Attend meetings with the Chief Financial Officer of the District on fiscal oversight issues as requested by the District;
  • • Provide all necessary financial reports as required for proper attendance reporting;
  • • Develop the School annual performance report, SARC, and the School Plan;
  • • Ensure all policies and procedures are distributed to and followed by staff, parents, and students;
  • • Provide leadership to the staff and the School Board in determining objectives and identifying program needs as the basis for developing long- and short-range plans;
  • • Monitor school-to-home communications including newsletter articles, regular school updates, handbooks, and daily or weekly information;
  • • Serve or appoint a designee to serve on any committees or workgroups of the Charter

School;

  • • Assume responsibility for his/her own professional growth and development through membership and participation in the affairs of professional organizations, through attendance at regional, state, and national meetings, through enrollment in advanced courses, and the like.

 

 

 

 

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

 

Selection of the Principal will be based on proven experience meeting the following qualifications:

  • • Master’s Degree in Education and/or Administrative Credential is preferred;
  • • Relevant successful experience as a school leader and teacher; a minimum of five (5)years of teaching experience and two (2) years of administrative experience is preferred;
  • • Relevant experience with school and organizational leadership and educational innovation;
  • • Expertise in curriculum design, supervision, and evaluation;
  • • Knowledge of special education programs, policies, and best practices;
  • • Ability to communicate and maintain effective working relationships with the Board of Directors, teachers, supporting staff, SAC, parents, and students;
  • • Interest in the Charter School model of public education and commitment to the Charter School’s success;
  • • Experience with school operations including finances, fundraising, facilities, health and safety and other operational management;
  • • Ability to solve public relations and internal relation problems in an effective manner;
  • • Knowledge of California Education Codes and California State Charter School laws;
  • • Possess a philosophy and standards of excellence consistent with those of the Charter School, the charter culture and LIFESKILLS, and the HET model;
  • • Maintain a professional attitude while supporting the SAC policies and decisions;
  • • Knowledge or experience with grant writing;
  • • Valid First Aid/CPR certificate; and
  • • Other qualifications and/or qualities deemed important by the Board of Directors.
