COMPUTER LAB PARAPROFESSIONAL
DEFINITION
Under general supervision, perform a variety of specialized instructional activities with an emphasis
on computer-assisted instruction; assist in the conduct of training and learning activities with children
in an alternative learning environment; perform a variety of routine clerical and supportive activities for
instructional personnel, assist with technology training of staff; and do other related work as required.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Under general supervision, present learning materials and conduct instructional exercises using
computers, independently supervise students; tutor individual students and small groups of students
with special learning needs to reinforce and follow-up learning and training activities; monitor and
assist all students in drill, practice and study activities as a follow-up to the presentation of
instructional lessons by instructional personnel; direct students into safe learning activities and
functions, and assist in shaping of appropriate social behaviors; assist in the management of student
behavior through the use of positive reinforcement strategies and techniques; assist in the preparation
of a variety of instructional materials and learning aids; maintain a variety of instructional media; assist
in the coordination and administration of pre and post achievement testing; provide tutorial help by
means of computer on a one-to-one or small group basis; assist students with academic deficiencies;
may prepare monthly computer lab schedules; log, catalog, and track all software used in both the lab
and the classroom; maintain all computer inventories throughout the school year; assist with library
computers and printers; recommend software purchases; order supplies for computer lab; create and
maintain files on all software (site licenses, etc.); may prepare and conduct inservice for teachers on
both software and computer use; prepare and conduct inservice for new teachers on the care of
computers in the classroom; design, prepare, and distribute manuals containing instructions for use of
school wide software; troubleshoot problems; serve on site or district technology committees.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
Methods and procedures of operating, and maintaining computer, peripherals, and other equipment
generally found in a technology lab;
Instructional delivery program utilizing computer assisted instruction;
Techniques in teaching keyboarding and word processing;
Various word processing programs and site application used;
Various spreadsheet and database programs;
Use of the internet and library software programs;
Computer literacy techniques;
Basic concepts of child growth and development and developmental behavior characteristics;
Behavior management strategies and techniques;
Basic concepts of mathematics;
Routine record storage, retrieval, and management procedures;
Correct English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation.
Ability to:
Demonstrate an understanding, patient, and receptive attitude toward students of varied age groups;
Appropriately manage student behavior and guide them toward more acceptable social behaviors;
Communicate effectively in oral and written form;
Perform routine clerical tasks and operate a variety of education and office related machines and
equipment;

Ability to (continued):
Learn to utilize a variety of appropriate instructional materials and procedures with an emphasis on

Establish and maintain an effective working relationship with those contacted in the course of work;
Relate effectively with racially and ethnically diverse staff, students, and community;
Maintain a clean environment in the computer lab;
Troubleshoot all computers, printers, digital cameras, TV’s, VCR’s, and all peripherals at site;
Maintain computer to television hookups;
Create and maintain a monthly computer lab schedule.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Education:
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade, supplemented by training or course work in child
growth and development, instructional technology, or a closely related field. Completion of one
college course or the equivalent on computer operation.
Experience:
One year of paid or volunteer experience working with various age levels requiring a specialized
learning environment involving computer assisted instruction.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
Work involves some pushing and pulling of objects weighing up to 100 pounds, with lifting of 50
pounds; physical dexterity in limbs and digits necessary to perform duties; ability to bend, stoop,
grasp, and reach.
