Job Description / Essential Elements: Print   

Definition: Under the supervision of an elementary school principal to plan and coordinate the operation of an extended student services program and preschool program.  Supervises the activities of preschool through eighth grade children enrolled in the programs.

Examples of Duties: Plans and coordinates the operation of an extended student services program (before and after school care) designed to meet the needs of kindergarten through eighth grade students and staff.   Plans and coordinates the operation of a preschool program.  Designs and implements a schedule of staff and activities appropriate to the goals of the extended student services program and the preschool program.  Establishes and maintains budgets, files and records related to the programs. Ensures performance of operational activities incidental to the operation of the program such as: collection of fees; the purchase of materials and supplies and preparation of snacks.   Provides direction and trains all staff and monitors performance for the purpose of the evaluation of staff. Explains aspects of the program to parents and the public and interprets policy and procedure with regard to program operation and staff responsibilities.  Facilitates articulation of activities for preschool through eighth grade school instructional programs. Provides parent inservices when appropriate. Works with children enrolled in the program. Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications Guide: Knowledge of theory and practice of childhood education; operation of extended student services program; standard recordkeeping and office management practices; principles of supervision and training; first aid and CPR; English usage, punctuation, spelling and grammar, Early Childhood education.

Ability to: Design, implement and coordinate the operation of an extended student services program.  Design, implement and coordinate the operation of a preschool program. Trains, directs and monitors staff; establish and maintain effective working relationships with adults and children; establish and maintain a safe and healthful environment.

Training and Experience: A combination of training and experience which governs the required level of knowledge and skill. A typical qualifying background would include education equivalent to graduation from high school, preferably supplemented by courses in child care, supervision, psychology, and guidance and training in early childhood education, including 3 units in day care program administration and at least one year of full time work experience in a preschool or day care program. Typing and word processing skills desirable. Preschool qualifications include:  Minimum 3 years experience in a preschool setting.  Knowledge of and the ability to work with outside agencies such as; Dept. of Social Services, CA Dept. of Social Services.  Develop and maintain budgets along with scheduling staff functions.  Knowledge of accounts receivable and accounts payable.  Current Food Handler's Card.  Current CPR & First Aid.
