SAN LEANDRO UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT OFFICE OF HUMAN RESOURCES JOB DESCRIPTION OFFICE CLERK III DEFINITION: Under general supervision to perform a wide variety of complex and responsible clerical work of more than average difficult; to act as secretary to an administrative official; to do job related duties as required. The execution of secretarial and clerical duties assigned to an Office Clerk III requires that an incumbent possess a thorough knowledge of school district policies, rules, and regulations pertinent to the department’s program; the application of this knowledge in answering questions directed to the administrator’s office; and independently completing a variety of difficult clerical tasks. Office Clerk III duties are assigned with only general instructions as to procedures to be followed and the results expected, and these results are usually reviewed only on completion of the assigned tasks. An Office Clerk III differs from an Office Clerk II in the greater variety and amount of public contact, clerical responsibilities, and independence exercised in completing assignments. Stenography is not a requirement of the position. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: Performs a wide variety of difficult clerical work including the personal performance or supervision of typing, checking, and recording information, compiling information for and preparing reports, and maintaining file systems; interviews office visitors in person or over the phone and either answers questions concerning the department’s activities, policies, or program, refers persons to another source of information, or schedules and appointment with the administrator; composes either independently or from oral instructions letters requesting or giving information or letters dealing with routine school district activities; makes arrangements for meetings and conferences; compiles and prepares reports; cuts mimeograph and other stencils and master copies; operates office appliances, including, but not limited to, adding machine, mimeograph, and ditto; receives, sorts, screens, marks important sections, and distributes incoming mail; may assign tasks to student helpers. QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of modern office methods and practices, including filing systems, receptionist and telephone techniques, and letter and report writing; correct English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation; common office machines and some skill in their operation; computer/keyboarding. Ability to type 50 words per minute; learn and interpret specific rules, laws, and policies and apply them with good judgment in a variety of procedural situations; perform responsible and difficult clerical work with accuracy and speed; deal effectively with a wide variety of personalities and situations requiring diplomacy, friendliness, poise, and firmness; analyze situations and adopt an effective course of action; carry out verbal and written directions independently; make arithmetical calculations quickly and accurately; work cooperatively with others; pass District test. EXPERIENCE: Three years of broad and varied experience in clerical work. EDUCATION: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade. 10/90
