R20 Parent Liaison
Characteristics of Class
Under supervision of the Executive Director of the Office of School/Family Partnership and Site Administrator, the Parent Liaison serves as a liaison between the San Francisco Unified School District and/or a specific school site and parents with regard to parent involvement activities. The Parent Liaison develops and implements a comprehensive program to improve and increase parent involvement in education. The incumbent works to enlist and engage culturally and linguistically diverse parent groups in program activities.
Schedule: School-term; Monday through Friday; May be required to work some evening and weekend hours.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education and Experience:

- Two (2) years of college-level coursework. (30 semester units or 45 quarter units equal one year); and
- Two (2) years of verifiable experience (one year = 2000 hours) of paid or volunteer work in the community with culturally, ethnically and socio-economically diverse population of parents of public school students. Such experience should include program or activities planning and coordination and parent education.
Substitutions:
Additional qualifying work experience may be used to substitute for up to two years of qualifying education on a year-for-year basis. (30 semester units or 45 quarter units equal one year).
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:
Utilizes knowledge appropriate to satisfy the duties listed below, including but not limited to familiarity with the SFUSD’s parent engagement goals, the objectives of the Office of School/Family Partnership and the District’s rules and procedures.
Abilities:
- Some positions require proficiency in Spanish and/ or Cantonese and able to both interpret and translate fluently
- Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with staff and community in a multi-ethnic educational environment, and both one-on-one and with a group.
- Develop and maintain good working relationships with school staff, parents and the general public.
- Computer literate
- Prepare accurate, concise data and materials.
- Read, understand and apply a variety of policies, rules and regulations.
- Act quickly and with mature judgement.
- De-escalate conflict.
Essential Job Functions:
- A. Physical: Employee in this position must have the ability to:
- Run for short periods of time, and stand, sit, and walk for extended periods of time.
- See and read printed matter with or without vision aids.
- Hear and understand speech at normal levels.
- Speak so that others may understand at normal level.
- Stoop, twist, bend over, grasp, reach overhead, push, pull, and move, lift and/or carry 20 pounds to waist height.
- B. Mental:
- Able to concentrate on a single task for up to two (2) hours at a time.
- Able to learn quickly and adapt to a variety of instructions and task methods.
- Able to meet deadlines in terms of work assignment schedules.
- C. Social:
- Interact daily in person with other members of school staff and parents and possess comfortable interpersonal skills and cooperative attitudes.
- Due to the time urgent nature of duties and because of work product of position is interdependent with that of parents and other staff, consistent attendance is required.
- Convey an understanding, patient attitude toward other staff, students and parents.
- Maintain the privacy of confidential information.
Duties:
- Help the school develop a family-friendly school climate.
- Develop programs and activities designed to engage families in improving student achievement.
- Help staff and families develop strong partnerships and enhance communication between families and school staff.
- Develop and implement effective family involvement strategies and activities to empower families in their role as partner with their student’s teacher.
- Participate in and support district activities and programs for families.
- Recruit partners to become part of the school’s family involvement program.
- Organize, implement, coordinate and present parent education workshops and training sessions.
- Prepare parent newsletters and other outreach and parent education materials.
- Contact individuals and groups to disseminate information and respond to questions and requests from school sites, parents, organizations and community groups.
- Develop volunteer activities at school site, including coordinating parent leaders, room parents, volunteers, etc.
- Collect, analyze and use the data arising from family involvement activities in order to evaluate and improve strategies.
- Prepare written reports and maintaining records on program activities.
- Attend professional development sessions.
- Performs related duties as required.
